John Hughes RIP Page 8

Kudos for mentioning Mannequin, which was one of the first big tests of Andrew McCarthy's lack of acting skills. Also, of course, had a theme tune from 'Starship' - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now. Oh dear.

Now you see, that's what Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink seemed like at the time. :)

Chaka Khan wearing deely boppers, a Choose Life t-shirt and attending a miner's strike riot isn't as 80's as Mannequin.

If they sold Mannequin at Pizza Hut, you wouldn't be able to lift a slice because of the extra cheese.

And it has a weirdly youthful Kim Catrall who's still uglier than a sack of spanners.

But 80s movies just rule! Working Girl, Pretty Woman, Lethal Weapon, Robo Cop, Debbie Does Dallas.

Here that 21st century you suck!

Do you mean in some sort of ironic sense?

You have no souls!!!

Mannequin is like, the best film evah!

It's one of those weirdly, utterly stupid and completely charmless films.

I keep trying to watch because I think it'll have a cooky charm and well, it just doesn't. It's awful soul less and so stupid.

WARNING!!

Continuing to discuss nostalgic memories from the 1980s will result in legal action from Stuart Maconie. Mr Maconie owns all rights to 1980s reminiscences discussed in a light-hearted manner.

Desist!

You have been warned.

Not at all. The 21st century has been a total waste of time, we should write off the last 9 years and redo the millenium.

Dolly, I was there! I was bloody there in the 80s! :S

I'm with sootyj on this one, 80's movies were the best. Skilled directors met Hollywood money and produced some truly wonderful films.

To name but a few -

Die Hard
Robocop
Highlander
The Hitcher
Robocop
Bact to the Future
Lethal Weapon
Blade Runner

Edit: How could I forget Terminator and Alien / Aliens!

The list goes on and on. I'm glad I grew up watching these and not Transformers 2 or Underworld 3.

But you're younger than me, aren't you?

And let's not forget Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

Of course and Ghostbusters. I mean there were some decent films in the 90s, but the 80s rocked. Comparing the current limp chick flicks and rom coms to awsome films like Pretty Woman or Working Girl.

I remember watching pirate videos in the 6th form common room. The films were so school we hardly even watched porn.

Top Gun and even it's rip off Iron Eagle were ace.

That's just nostalgia. They were limp in their time.

They were so not! I watched Working Girl in the cinema and apart from being deeply sexy it was just awsome. Like a film of the golden age of Hollywood with a modern sensibility.

So?

I was watching John Hughes films when they were originally released, so I think I can comment to some extent that not everyone found them terrible and uncool. :D

Oh, and National Lampoon's Vacation, which he also wrote and directed, was genuinely funny. The only one of the Vacation series which was. And the last time Chevy Chase ever made me laugh.

I suspect Dolly was there drinking cider, shop lifting tapes from Ourprice and stealing all the nerds 10 sided dice.

Don't know if it's been mentioned amongst all this talk of 80s films, but Hughes also did National Lampoon's Vacation which was awesome.
