John Hughes RIP Page 4

Home Alone though was awful as was every film he made after that point.

Uncle Buck was the real turning point for him; that film was 50% dark and funny and 50% dreadful cheese.

Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink were awful. They were awful at the time and they still are.

I too loathed The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink at the time. And Sixteen Candles and Some Kind of Wonderful. And Dirty Dancing (which had nothing to do with John Hughes). But I liked Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck. I have always hated Home Alone.

The release of Not Another Teen Movie prompted me to rewatch most of the John Hughes high school movies, as well as Better Off Dead and some more recent teen movies that I'd not previously seen: She's All That, Mean Girls, Bring It On and Rudy. To my surprise, I was struck by maudlin mawkish sentimentality - possibly due to some of the songs (even The Smiths are used in Pretty in Pink) - and enjoyed most of the John Hughes films (though will never enjoy Home Alone and The Breakfast Club still annoys me).

And Molly Ringwald was great in Not Another Teen Movie, though the Friends rip-off sitcom she did was crap.

Home Alone is ace!
You are all demented in the noggin.

Insulting an entire gender? Alas that sounds like the sound of a French bugle which can only play "retreat!"

I mean what films were you watching at the time?

You know, the cool ones. :)

Honestly, myself and a group of friends were given some free preview tickets from TopShop to go and see Pretty in Pink. We were a group of grammar school girls and we though it was the biggest pile of wank going. We were embarrassed to be watching it. We must have been about 14 and we'd been happier drinking cider in the park (you could still smoke in the cinema then.). We watched Breakfast Club on video and againwe were embarrassed - especially by the dancing.

We used to watch The Deerhunter, The Terminator, Spinal Tap and The Hitcher (and Bumf**kers, which belonged to my friend's brother).

I don't know her but how can anyone with the name Molly be considered sexy?

(Go on - I'm waiting)

The best bit of Uncle Buck for me was John Candy's acting when he is in the car with the two kids (Culkin and the little girl) and he has a dilemma about whether to take them with him when he goes gambling.
The worst bit was the end when the older girl hugs the mum *puke*
Best line - Tia: 'What's a Chanice?' (I like Uncle Buck)

:)

PS I am retarded

Ah - now you're talking! Dirty Dancing!

I think (whatever faults there were in terms of style and substance in his work) that John Hughes brought some genuinely funny and warm moments to audiences. Ferris Bueller... was, in terms of his legacy to movie comedy, possibly his most important legacy (which is often cited by other comedy directors as a great film). He left the world a better place than he found it, I reckon.

I think Home ALone would have been greatly improved by the burglars getting Caulkin and selling him to Micheal Jackson.

Other than that it's sentimental and vile. People there are 2 truly good Christmas films; Die Hard and Scrooged.

And possibly that black and white Christmas Carole. Every other one is unforgivably shit.

That said the only Hannukah movie is even worse.

I love all those films too.
Except Spinal Tap.

You see Ferris Bueller was good. The other teeny ones were shit believe me.

I probably saw The Breakfast Club within a few months of films like Repo Man, This is Spinal Tap and Eraserhead. Room for all types of film I think, but fair enough if you didn't like it. I thought it was okay. Ally Sheedy.

Zoooo!!! And you're going to be my neighbour soon and I was going to invite you around for tea.

Die Hard and Scrooged.

Ah. Two of my other favourite Christmas films!
