John Hughes has died at the age of 59. Very sad for any fans of films such as The Breakfast Club, 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', 'Planes, Train and Automobiles', 'Weird Science' and many more.

I'd heard rumours that he was making plans to make a bit of a comeback. He was very much a writer & director of the 80s & early 90s, but I would have loved to seen a new film by him.

RIP.

And for those a little too young to easily remember who he was, here's his wiki entry...

:O :(

Made some great films. As a mark of respect I shall wear a bra upon my head for the next minute.

*takes off bra*

RIP

Much props to a good director.
But...doesn't anyone else think he looks a bit like Ricky Gervais?

No.

No waaay!
That's pretty young. :(

I loooove Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller and Home Alone. And Curly Sue and Uncle Buck! Okay, nothing very recent, but still.

That's awful Breakfast Club ruled!

He had a midas touch in the 80s - didn't register he'd dropped off the radar until now. RIP, and thanks for introducing me to Ally Sheedy.

Much as I love this film for many varied reasons, the genius of Hughes as a director was the Judd Nelson POV shot of Molly Ringwald's panties under the desk. An image that will still be burned into my retina until the day I die.

"What if your grass was on fire?"
"Impossible, sir, it's in Johnson's underwear."

Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink were awful. They were awful at the time and they still are.

Very zeitgeisty, if that's a word.

They are funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

I don't remember a panty shot.
I mainly remember that scene with the other girl's dandruff. Ick.

Blasphemy! They are very 80s kitsch and very middle-class American. I agree. And viewed that way they can be found wanting, but there was something genuinely charming about them and John Hughes did understand the teenage psyche.

His funniest film IMO was Planes, Trains and Automobiles, which is a truly great comedy.

Uncle Buck, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Home Alone. He was an 80's hit machine, wrote some really good Christmas movies.

Oh I don't really like that one.
