How dare you scouse me up!
So how do I learn to write? Page 10

I love that expression but is it Scottish?
I've never heard anyone Scottish use it. In my experience they tend to use "f**k yous!" and "bollocks!"

Get a round in then.

Goodness me! No wonder you got kicked out of Enid's 'Secret Eight'
Quote: Griff @ August 5 2009, 2:38 PM BSTHi Loopey I agree, the kind of course you are talking about would probably be good. It's the "go and learn Ancient Greek" approach which I think might not be helpful.
Not sure too many people said that, and even if they did it's fair enough as a brainstorming idea. Or "ideas shower", if you prefer. I suggested that Sootyj didn't need to take any sort of course, because his stuff is getting better and better anyway, but if he wanted to take a course he might consider a foreign language as a more interesting and better way of learning grammar. And he'd learn a new skill to boot.

Aren't Leevil and Putters in Blyton's "Secret Eighth"?
You gonna set your dog on her?
I'm sure Chapman was only joking!
But anyway, never mind. Moving on.

Not-so-secret maybe.

Eighth?

I suppose there is a first time for everything.
Quote: Griff @ August 5 2009, 11:11 PM BSTSooty - sorry to be talking about you as if you're not here.
It's sootyj! J!
Quote: Griff @ August 5 2009, 11:11 PM BSTAlso for possibly the first time ever I found myself slightly disagreeing with Marc P. It's not quite cricket to say "actually you can get away without using English correctly in novels" (which is of course very true) when he is talking about a finely-judged stylistic decision based on a knowledge of genre and backed up by a strong command of English. Sooty's sentence composition difficulties are (often) far more basic than that and he should be encouraged to learn how to fix them rather than told "well you can get away with anything if you really know what you're doing."
I agree, I wan't saying he should continue as he does, as he acknowledges, but rather edit what he writes. Meaning is everything - spelled correctly this time (me I mean). It's the articulation of that personal meaning that is everything. Nothing else really. And that articulation doesn't has to be grammatical it just has to make sense in some way.
