The man who invented the body mass index actually invented it as a means of telling things like breeding and if a person was prone to things such as crime. It was never meant to indicate ideal weight! Random fact I know.

It really was intended for the above use.
BMI is a very dodgy and dark grey area. It CAN come in useful sometimes but it's not a quality indicator of health.
BMI is a guess to be honest and gets taken a bit too seriously.
