Books that disappoint Page 10

How can people dis the Fry? He is so quintessentially English that they could put his picture in the dictionary under Englander. Witty, urbane, funny, erudite, charismatic - all words Stephen Fry would use to describe me, if he knew me.

Of course, I've never read any of his books or drank Twinnings tea, so maybe my view of 'Der Fry' is idolised.

You have a problem with fat people as well as the jug eared! I'm saddened by your shallowness, Zooo.

Yes, Chip, it's very shallow to judge people on their looks, isn't it? ;)

Maybe because he's rammed down our throats as a man we must like.

The Hippopotamus is his best novel by far. Making History is the weakest.

Maybe because he's rammed down our throats

Possibly a bad choice of words.

Have you had him rammed down your throat, then? Dirty boys.

It is, which is why I've satirised that mindset with my popular BCG character "Chipolata". ;)

Having enjoyed popular history novels like Longitude about Harrison's clocks, I picked up an interesting looking book called 1421 the Year China discovered the World outlining an ambitious Chinese voyage around world that has been pieced together by 'expert authour' Gavin Menzies, a former navigator in the Royal Navy. A plausible idea, as it is a matter of record China had established port throughout the Indian Ocean in this period, it becomes clear after about 150 pages this man is either a nutter of Erik Von Dannekin proportions or a shameless chancer. This utter bilge doesn't stands up to the scrutiny of the most casual lay person and the publishers ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Like you wouldn't love to have a chubby effete homosexual ramming himself down your thoat, Walnut Boy!

According to a friend of mine who was posted in Beijing when it came out, the Chinese thought it was hilarious.
