Books that disappoint

We all receive recommendations to read certain books that just don't live up to the hype.
Have you been sorely disappointed when reading highly acclaimed works?

Hyped ones yes. Acclaimed ones no.

I read the Bible. Turns out he was a ghost all along.

Tales of Imagination?

John sits in his favourite, big red armchair. He rests his head back and imagines tales of mystery. Who knows what's happening in there?

The End.

Load of rubbish.

Bloody Poe Basher!

As for books that disappoint, I'd nominate Salman Rushdie's entire ouvre.

The Life of Pi springs to mind as one I could not be arsed to finish.

I was recently sorely disappointed by Ian McEwan's Amsterdam.
Particularly the really shit ending to the book.

I've been disappointed by all of Rushdie's books since he started hanging around with rock stars. But the first five novels are great.

Yeah, Poe is vastly overrated. Baudelaire is mainly to blame for this.

Anything by Dan Brown...

(except digital fortress)

And not so much a book, but Chekov's always left me cold. Maybe I haven't seen him done right.

Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe.

As for books that disappoint, what about Great Expectations? And The Da Vinci Code was satisfyingly crap. Red Dwarf - Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers was a waste of time.

I dearly hope you're joking!

I was highly recommended Perfume and thought it was awful. I didn't care about any of the characters and the ending was stupid.

Tend not to bother with the bestseller list, but anything that wins a literary prize should be viewed with the utmost suspicion

"Oranges are not the only fruit" - Jeanette Winterson

Was well pissed off as I bloody love Oranges and as it turns out Lesbian adventures!

Ha!

I haven't liked any Dickens.
