How about Red Moon Black Mountain by I think Joy Chant.
I read the Dark is Rising sequence as an adult and thought the film was the worst thing I have ever seen.
The Eathsea Trilogy

Earthsea yes, though quite dark for kids; The Dark is Rising, not so much.

Brother in the Land by Robert Swindells. Quite scary.
flat stanley and tyke tyler. oh and the hardy boys
i read a lot of the bible when I was a kid and thought it was brilliant. I did have a tendancy for the illustrated bible but I also read the orginal version. Not all of it I must add and it wasn't like I was forced to but regardless of your reglion if you get on the right stories it is pretty gripping stuff.
And a shitload of Asrerix. F**k Tintin. You heard me.

Just Googled that one, might be better than the cover and blurb suggests. Post ot to me if you like I'll read it and let you know!
