RIP Harry Patch

He was my favourite remaining WWI tommy. Teary

He had a great name too. And he was born a year after my grandfather.

Did he attribute his longevity to anything?

Not dying.

Not getting shot in the Battle of Passchendaele mainly.

Harry Patch? What a great name. Second only to NASCAR racer Dick Trickle.

Some of the best names I've ever heard are people my brother works with. I can't say where or what these names are obviously, but they're mostly alliterative; like Benny Basket, Tommy Tickle, Duggie Dunnie. He might be making them up though.

Not dying.

And: "I neither smoke, drink nor gamble. The three sins, leave them alone… I feel about 50. Fresh air, no petrol and no cars, that's the secret."

See, high-speed travel wears you down. And living in Wales is healthy, apparently.

I wouldn't want to live to 111 without drinking or smoking. The gambling I can give a miss.

You don't live longer, it just seems longer. (As the old joke goes.)

I cannot begin to imagine what these guys had to do and the things they saw. An amazing generation.

On a sillier note I used to work with a guy called Paul Tinkler and that made me smile every day.

Wells.

Wells.

Wouldn't that be a little damp? Actually just like living in Wales.

Didn't he get together with a bunch of other guys and shoot at foreigners? All sounds a bit racist too me...

Sounds beautiful to me. Teary

Coincidence we lost two of them this week. Maybe they just felt so strongly about our presence and casualties in Afghanistan ad Iraq.
