Torchwood... Page 39

That could be a good point, yes.

I recorded the episodes and finally sat down to watch them last night. Watched the first 4 parts in a row, and was tempted to watch the 5th but it was 1.30am by then. Just watched part 5.

I thought it was excellent, if only Torchwood was like that all the time. If only Dr Who was more like that too. You can't beat a good story, a cracking pace and a serious tone. Great stuff, and I'm normally very hard to please.

I'm glad everyone else enjoyed it. :(

You didn't? it was brilliant TV.

These were the first episodes I've really watched and I enjoyed it. How does it compare to the rest?

You'd probably be quite surprised, these latest episodes are quite a different beast in many respects to the previous two series. I suppose the best way to describe it, is that the first two series were often quite teenage in feel, as opposed to this mini-series more adult tone. I enjoyed Torchwoods first two runs, there were some good episodes, especially in series two, but these latest episodes saw them really nail the show for the first time to me. Hopefully, if we get more, it'll carry on in this most recent vein.

You didn't?

Not much. I found it 'bearable', which puts it above my past experience, but I'm sick of watching so much time devoted to soldiers running around and pointing guns.

On the plus side, the 'supporting' cast was great, and I admit to enjoying some of it up until episode 4.

Well, I suppose they could have sent librarians to round up the kids. ;)

...there were a few little things which puzzled me, too. For instance, old scientist gets shot in the leg by the fit paramilitary bird; a few minutes later he's OK again and helping them. WTF?

Also, it's near the end and Jack hasn't saved the Earth yet. Right then, have him twiddle some knobs on the whizzy kit. That was easy!

In terms of hard science, it was not much more sophisticated than Dr. Zarkov knocking up a new ray gun for Flash Gordon, but it made narrative sense, in that the key to solving the problem was Jack realising the significance of Clem's death, and the moral dilemna meant that it was far from easy.

Yeah, Clem. He was Jack's grandson, wasn't he. I know that because the writer/s *told* me so, and if they hadn't told me, he'd have just been another kid actor without any proper lines. Perhaps you've met him in previous episodes which I missed? I just didn't respond emotionally to it.

No Clem was the elderly orphan played by Paul Copley. You really weren't paying attention were you?

The grandmother had been introduced in a previous episode. That the relationship had resulted in a child was a reveal, but we are always learning new things about Jack's past, that is part of the fun of the character. The child was not a developed character, but his mother was, and it was Jack's betrayal of his daughter that gave the storyline its emotional charge.

My bad, I hadn't quite woken up before 7 this morning.
I accept that you have an advantage if you've seen the relationship develop over previous shows.

Great ratings:

Congrats to Torchwood, but overall a sad snapshot of our nation.
