David Mitchell will be on Desert Island Discs. Which songs will he choose?
David Mitchell will be on Desert Island Discs
He's on everything now! I'm now having to decide whether or not to do the decent English thing and start slagging him off.
It this a radio show? I'd like to have a listen. Isn't it going to be dead air? He said he doesn't enjoy music and has no record collection.

It's a very famous BBC Radio institution, has been going for decades. Each week a well-known guest is asked to choose items they would take with them if they were stranded alone on a desert island. The musical choices punctuate the show, which is also sort-of a general interview with the guest as well. As English (if not more so) than 'The Archers'.
More info on it...

And it's repeated.

The Radio Times says it is a very interesting episode. He talks candidly about stuff like being shy talking to women.

A song by Kermit the Frog!
Just to let people know: Desert Island Discs isn't available on the iPlayer for some reason, so you'll have to listen to it live.

Thanks for that info, Mark. So I'll be listening to this at 5:00 AM? Is it 10:00 Sunday morning or Sunday night? Kind of vague, to me.
Thanks to all who responded.

I believe it is because of the music rights.

Surely the same issue would apply to a lot of radio shows that the BBC feature on iPlayer though? Is 'DID' technically a BBC World Service programme? As the World Service is actually funded by the Foreign Office, not the BBC, some thorny issues regarding featuring its productions on iPlayer might arise? World Service and its productions are not meant to be seen to have any commercial ties, even as innocent as iPlayer. Technically, the World Service isn't meant for UK consumption at all. Saying this, I don't know if 'DID' is a World Service production, that just happens to feature on Radio 4 as well? Anyone?
I seem to remember that the problem lies in the fact that no agreement has been reached with the owners to the rights of the show.
I am, unsurprisingly, really looking forward to this...

...but that was my first thought too!
I suppose it could be comedy recordings he chooses. Either way: <3

Other people often choose the same sorts of things. These include:
A classical track or two, to attempt to appear dignified:
An embarrassing chart track to attempt to appear cool:
Some old tosh from when they were a teenager which reminds them of some special time.

An excellent, long interview with David Mitchell today on Test Match Special.
When taken to task for referring to the England Cricket Team as "we" when he had previously lampooned football supporters' use of "we", he responded:
'It's the prerogative of the comedian to be a hypocrite'.
He also revealed that his Desert Island Discs 'one record' is Kermit singing 'Rainbow Connection'
Currently listening to it now. Mitchell has indeed picked songs that fit into the categories which NoggetFred has stated above.
I had no idea he was so much like his Peep Show character. He hates to think that people might think him to be vain, and says that the fact he even thinks this way, is itself vain. Poor guy!
It was an interesting and sensitive interview, imo.
