Best Sopranos season?

I've seen all of the show, it is definitely one of the best drama TV series ever. Comfortable amongst my top 4 faves. One of the best TV shows of any kind ever full-stop too.

I don't know if I could pick a 'best season', most were superb (maybe tailed off a little in spells during the end of 6 and 7) with great storylines etc. Each season from season 2 has a certain 'loose cannon' character who makes the season great, you had Richie Aprile, Ralphie for two seasons and then Tony B.

At a stretch I would say the show was at its absolute peak from season 2-4 and a bit beyond. I would struggle to pick a favourite episode.

On the whole I think the show gets better in ways as it goes along, purely because you really get to know the characters more. They are genuinely complex and layered. Tony is the obvious candidate but at least 6 or 7 more truly great characters. Observing his relationship with Chrissy through the seasons makes for great viewing.

Paulie Walnuts is definitely the funniest character though. The ridiculous comments he makes all the time are pricelessly funny, the way he says it and the expression on his face. Virtually everything he says is comical.

My personal favourite Paulie walnuts quote is when Tony B is going into business with some Koreans. His advice is:

"Remember Pearl harbour"

I'm a huge Sopranos fan too, but how can any top 5 TV drama list not include The Wire? For shame.

Weird thread, but I'd say the first season simply because I loved Tony's mother and the moment you realised she was plotting to have him killed to stop him talking to a psychiatrist was one of the greatest TV moments ever.

They may be mine as well. Although I'm tempted to find froom for Boston Legal and The Shield.

6 Feet under was rather good as was 80s Grangehill.
There are few shows as entertaining and as engrossing as the Sopranos.

The way they could flip between humour and menace was a thing of beauty.

Both shows are completely different. But The Sopranos is far more enjoyable for me. It's a show that I'll want to revisit every 6 months or so, in fact.

The Wire is very good, and it's the type of show that could attract more viewers, but it just falls short by some distance for me. Theres no real great characters in it, just some solid-good ones. Sopranos is funnier too, and is one of the funnier shows going around when it tries to be.

Ralphie was great:

"A, she hit me. B, she was a hoo-arr."

Meadow got hotter with every passing season too.

IMHO, it's chocked with great characters.

The Wire is good as a police procedural, but there's some how a lack of solid character dynamic that drags me in.

Exactly my thoughts.

I mean the complex thing with Tony about being the great powerful boss, with this oedipal complex thing was really sharp. Or the scene where Pauly visits a medium and freaks out. That's just awsome, awsome drama.

But with the Wire it's good...but McNulty is just another brilliant cop, who's a womaniser and who's personal life is a mess. None of them jumped off the screen and there was none of the real sadness when Big Pussy got offed.

I'm re-watching this at the moment, having bought the box-set on Amazon for £14. Bargain.

As for favourites, I'd agree with 24, the Shield, and the Sopranos.
