I do it when I get on, usually.

I thank the driver if they serve me or wait for me to get on, but I don't shout thank you down to the driver when I get off espeically when I used to use route masters. And particulary given the way they drive.

When I briefly lived in the country I discovered the thanking the driver to let you off at a stop business.

I always thank the driver. "Thanks a lot," I say as I get off. Or sometimes just, "Thanks." Depends what mood I'm in. Although the time I was molested on the bus from Kingston to Cheam I didn't thank him, not that I in any way held him responsible for what had happened to me.
