There's already a thread for this - see the 'Cheltenham Screen Writers Workshop'.
Via an evolutionary ladder methinks.
Actually, I wonder what the ev ladder would look like from first timer and Gervais. Who would be in between?

Go on stage and tell some funny gags or stories.

You start with ambition, so you are on the way.

You'll all be laughing on the other side of your face when I come back looking like Richard Pryor.
What in a wheel chair? On fire and with polio?

I think you have to pay extra for that.

Gervais progression from Comedy Lab to Hollywood is pretty clear and easy to (attempt) to follow....comedy lab and a few sketches written for others turns into 11 oclock show, turns into his chat show, turns (via merchants "in" with the bbc) to The Office, etc, etc
The missing link that would be of real interest is how he went from useless DJ to staring in a Comedy Lab with zero experience....a far harder (in theory) task than being allowed to do The Office.
Maybe the sad (for those without an "in") truth is that having a partner/wife in TV land helps...it's not what you know, etc, etc.
Summary...never be afraid to tap up anyone you know for help!
