I have decided to make him an insomniac. As I can easily write it cos i've got it. Have to work out how it affects his work/life aswell. Thinking of having him work mostly at night or something like that. Now all I need is a sidekick.

Barney did release "The Order" which is the dream from Cremaster 3 for mass audiences. The DVD's are pieces of art themselves with unique images on them. If you look on you tube, you can find the odd clip filmed by spotty european art students sneaking their cameras into the Guggenheim before being dragged out by their piano braces.
I like it, like a postcard showing the cycle of life on an alien world. I'm loathe to believe he chose the name 'cremaster' for any reason other than 'it's a cool sounding word', but I don't have a problem with that. The sexual imagary drove the narrative without being gratuitous. The production and direction was amature (taking into account it was being illegally recorded on a a camcorder), which bugged me, although I suppose $10 million to make a film is a relatively small amount of money.
It's interesting that as technology develops and the new media artists work on becomes more easily copied and distributed, people go to more and more lengths people to make things 'exclusive'. In fact in the days when this wasn't the case (e.g. during the renaissance period) art was treated with as much dignity as wallpaper and (with the exception of religious paintings and frescos) chucked in the bin as soon as the owner got bored with it.

What's the cause of his insomnia?
How about the agrophobic sidekick who will always find an excuse not to go with him?
I know what you're thinking, how does he get to the office if he's agrophobic! Well, he could live upsatirs or within the building or the office itself. Perhaps not the latter! He could do all his detective work from his window and a big pair of binoculars or tap into the CCTV footage around where the sitom is set!
His previous jobs could have been an outdoor pursuits instructor, or doorman or security guard (backstory of why he is now a secret agrophobic). If he's agrophobic, then he is likely to be neurotic (nerdy kid becomes highly intellegent adult with a background in computers).
Anyway, enough working for you...if you do not decide to go with this, i will nick it back (only joking before the plagarism police arrive).
The sidekick could be a habitual liar. The hero would never really know where he stands with him.
Give him tourettes.
Or even better, make him a filthy perv.

Charley for the last time i'm not going to base the character on you
I saw the film Insomnia on a ferry to France. Actually, I fell asleep though it! True story.

You may be interested in looking at Massurealism if you are interested in mass media technolgies in art.
Whoa! That sounded smart. don't panic, it will pass. Hold on....
Why are there no fast food joints specialising in french food like battered snail bites for example?
There we go, back to Rubyworld.
Is all media-art surreal?
French fast-food places are called patisseries.

There's your answer
If your main character is an insomniac make his assistant a narcoleptic. I don't quite know how that would work but it sounds funny to me.
I love narcoleptics. I've written at least three narcoleptic characters over the years.
Ooh, and sleepwalkers. Gotta love them.
