"Wow a bargain",
instead think:
"Wow, they wouldn't sell it for less than they paid so 70% off means that the normal markup is at least 333% "

Ok, not exactly for nothing. But it's very rare I've gone on to purchase any of the free product samples I receive, and quite often, never get any follow up spam.
That's just a variant on advertising; encouraging word-of-mouth recommendations, the cost of a free sample to an occasional individual (quantity controlled by the rules of the competitions) is outweighed by the increased sales caused by the advertising.

With respect, I think we probably all realise this. It's sort-of how capitalism works (or doesn't, depending on your point of view).
