You dimwit, Yellows 586. Yellows 1 through 585 must be turning in their graves.

Also, glad you mentioned his girlfriend. She's produced some right old derivative shit over the years.

They are. That's a lot of spinning.

When he says that British shows rip off Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld...I hope he's including The Office and Extras in that.

Not forgetting Larry Sanders.

To be fair I think the press are just dying to knock Gervais down a peg or two. Let's face it, he's mega-successful, which we hate in this country, and to make matters worse he doesn't really do humble, which we hate even more.

I think it really galls the British press that they don't have any dirt to dig up on Gervais...he's been married for years, doesn't seem to have affairs, doesn't do drugs or the celeb scandal scene, so the only thing they can get him on are his controversial views on British comedy. Basically he's come out and said that in his opinion American comedy is in much better shape than British comedy at the moment. Shock horror. This site is replete with posters slagging off Britcoms every single day, the only difference being The Sun couldn't give a f**k about what we think because we're not massively-successful millionaire comedians who they want to knock down a peg or two.

I think it really galls the British press

The British press are us. The great British public. The people who buy it. Newspapers only write the stories and publish the pictures we want to see. Of course it gives us all a nice sense of moral superiority to think of the British press as some malignant organism separate from us. But the truth is, we're intertwined.

There is indeed a symbiotic element to the relationship. *strokes chin*

The Sun also has an article on how Leevil thinks these Ricky Gervais debate threads never produce a new or interesting opinion, on any topic, relating to Gervais or his exploits or non-exploits as in the case of his recent "slamming".

:D

(Although he never said anything. It was the moustache that made me think he was Eastern European).

It's always a dead giveaway... Eh?

I think that's only part of the truth. Yes, they give us what we want, but they also invent stuff and pass it off as real. Take the jingoism of certain rags; they will take a story, magnify the inflammatory bits, and ignore anything which gives some balance. Sure, their readers love this sort of crap and should really consider turning their brains on now and again, but they don't ask the paper to present skewed stories.

Fair point, Lee. But you should know that a comedy message board forum is no place for well thought out ideas and reasoned opinions.

Spot on

The press made Gervais; people remembered how crap he was on the 11 o'clock show when the Office first aired, the media upped this whole "saviour of comedy" crap and have kept it going since then, with minimum mentions of Merchant's co-writing position... he's looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg overdue a big fall from grace, Shandling was the closest to pull it off.

Who'd consider Seinfeld to be modern anyways?
What's the point in getting annoyed about this statement too, the thing I'd be bothered by is how he thinks he's some sort of elder statesman already. His blog is one of the most annoying things on the internet.

America is better at the moment though in my opinion too.

...outta curiousity, what're the poor copies of Seinfeld and Entourage?

I actually liked him on the 11 O'clock show :$ Not so much his chat show though.

See I don't get that. Nobody roots for successful people to fail in any other profession do they? You never hear people saying "That f**king Alan Sugar, it's about time he made some dodgy investments". No, he gets nowt but respect. Showbiz is such a weird profession to be in, with the public absolutely delighting in the downfalls of the famous.

I do agree to a point though about the press largely ignoring Merchant. If I was him I'd be thankful for that.
