Let's ban words, they're the culprits! Page 2

Lol! Aida!

You Ntdn!

I just hope we don't go back to the days where swear words per episode becomes judged on a some sort of points-based system.

All the words in a good script (swear words or not) will have been agonised over by a good writer. I'm sure I'm not the only one who goes back over every line time and again. I don't put in any swear word just to fill a comedy gap.

However, it's important to have the freedom to write the appropriate words where they're needed. My two recent new scripts might demonstrate my point. In my fun, studio audience based sitcom, there are two bleeped instances of the word "f**king". These only work in the context of the show if they are bleeped, but are needed due to the familiar character they are portraying. There are no other instances of swearing in the script whatsoever. In the single camera script, the 'c' word is used once in the opening scene. There are barely any other swear words in the rest of the script. For comic and dramatic effect I really do need the 'c' word. Yes, the scene could be done without it, but taking it out (I feel) might lessen it. If I find eventually it can work without that word, then so much the better.

Can you imagine The Thick of It without swearing?

I f**king love swearing.

But funnily enough I hardly ever use it in scripts.

Yeah, but the swearing in The Thick of It is almost poetic. Half the hacks that choke their scripts with F-words are just lazy f**kers.

Maybe they should go the other way, and put it into EastEnders and Coronation St.

In America I hear you can buy these 'words' over the counter at Wallmart!

1. Dicked
2. Magpie
3. Genius

Is the answer - Tommy Boyd?

Sorry seems to be the hardest word.

'Tarmac' is the word on the street.

'Sorry' isn't the hardest word to say. 'You're right' is harder!

Technically two words, Robert. (Not just technically, actually, also in any other way you want to describe them. Except by noting the abbreviation implied with "you're", in which case resolving it stretches it to three words. Still not one word. Jesus I'm lonely...)
