Perhaps he did it to offset the paltry sum he doubtless received for doing Dolls House at the Donmar with Gillian Anderson. He was great in Heroes, though. Total show stealer.

As for Heroes, the actors in that are okay. The only really bad one is that Asian guy who narrates. He's awful.

In a way that was his problem in Doctor Who, he seemed a different sort of actor to the others in the show.
