Best and Worst moments of your Writing career Page 8

Ha ha, I was referring to an argument a while ago about a selective forum area.

Oh I'm just being grumpy, ignore me.

I always do! :)

Btw I have someone very famous in the world of comedy's email private address and I wouldn't share with it anyone.

I went for some M&W sketches a while back,

I thought you meant Morecambe and Wise.

Maybe the site could do with some sort of private members area,a kind of exclusive forum for the slightly more successful to share info like this....

Why hasn't anyone thought of this before. ;)

It's not the more succesful ones who need the help!

Griff is a nice guy, but no-one is going to divulge information of this sort unless they have reason to believe that you would use it responsibly, and that you are someone the recipient might conceivably want to hear from. Perhaps people need to think of this site less as a billboard and more as a networking opportunity.

I agree with Timbo. Apart from the bit about Griff.

(Only joking - don't be fooled by the grumpy online persona, he really is a nice fella)

If it's syd.little@scope.com we've all got that one.

Aha! No, it's eddie_large@fatfunnies.com . We all know he's the talent behind the duo.

I wouldn't even mind if someone'd quietly PM-ed me. (Don't bother now, you can all f**k off.) But no, everyone's just demanding (five f**king times in the case of Mikado) that I post it on the board. Grrr. Angry Angry Angry

Griff, can you post the details please?

Oh I'm just being grumpy, ignore me.

Who said that?

Frustrating though life almost always is, Griff is quite right not to divulge any contacts without the recepient's permission.

And remember, the people who have got a useful contact most likely weren't just handed it, they earned it due to their time and hard work. (Unless, like me, they just pay someone on the inside to illegally supply them with email addresses and telephone numbers.) :)

Here, here.

Bloody Hell it ain't that hard to find out who to contact about Mitchell & Webb submissions, or any other show for that matter. Watch the show's credits. Note the production company or specific producer. Buy a copy of the latest Writers And Artist's Yearbook or Google them. Send a nicely-worded email or even phone. Be respectful but bold and ask if you can send a few sample sketches in.
Scoff if you like, but it works (sometimes). When you're first starting out especially, you just need to do a bit of detective work to track people down and force your work up their noses.

Of course they may turn you down flat but there's always that chance that the guy's in a good enough mood to give you a chance and say "Yeah sure, send a couple of sample sketches in". And if they're suitable, they'll be in touch. You must remember that the producers of these shows are just people trying to make headway in a very, very tough and competitive business, and in actual fact they're dying to make contacts with great new writers, because writers are the lifeblood of their careers. You should never be in awe of these people. Respectful, yes.

Nobody's going to turn you down for being a bit cheeky and not going through the accepted channels, (whatever the Hell they may be), as long as your work is good.

So...yeah. You know, just do it.

I'd add there's an old adage.
A dog can chase a car but if it catches it can it drive it?

Make sure your work is of a decent standard before you send it off. And that can take time.

What if it was a dog/human from The Island of Dr. Moreau? It could maybe drive an automatic? If you left the keys in.

For that to happen: I think the driver stopped at a light and that's when he was jumped by the dog hybrid thing that took off with the car. And there could be more to the story:)

It could maybe drive an automatic?

1: It could, but the ride would be 'ruff'.
2: It wouldn't be able to turn rrrrr-ight, unless it was at a hound-about.
3: The car's manufacturer would have to have been taken over by BMW in the 90's, sold off in 2000 and ceased production in 2005.

Obviously make your work as best as it can be before showing people. But then what if your work just isn't good enough? You'll never know without a professional opinion. But then what if the person who said yur work was shit is wrong? Then you get a second professional opinion. Then what if the second person agrees with the first? Then you either give up or try to get better. Most give up because rejection is hard. The whole damn thing is hard. If only the potential rewards (artistic as well as financial) weren't so alluring I'd have given up trying long ago.

Lee is absolutely right. It's not hard to track these people down. I'm no Columbo. However if I posted their details on here I would run the risk of pissing them off massively. That's all there is to it.

How many times have you said this now, Griff? I dipped into the forum yesterday at about six and you were saying the same thing then! :)
