I just thought I would open up a thread on what for me was Britains finest script writer. He wrote the wonderful Till Death us do Part and its spin off In Sickness and in Health. He also wrote the controversial series Curry and Chips starring Spike Milligan and Eric Sykes. If you watch the show (which is very unlikely, I was lucky enough to watch it at an Asian film exhibition in Bradford) then you will see that Speight's undoubted intention was to ridicule racist attitudes. Has anyone seen it at all. Sadly Johnny died in 1998.
Johnny Speight
I was a big fan of 'til death us do part' which was a massive show when I was a kid... I vaguely remember 'curry and chips'...
I've seen - and got - the first two episodes of Curry and Chips. Not particularly racist (but then I'm not a Sun reader...), but not particularly funny either.
Not seen enough of any of his other shows, unfortunately.

I've seen the first episode where Kevin O'Grady joins LillicrapLtd and he and the Eric Sykes charactor go for a drink and then Kevin comes to live with in Eric Sykes's lodgings. What happened in episode two?
It's a while since I've watched it, but pretty much more of the same, as I'm sure you can imagine!
Oh right yes, oh well looking forward to watching it.
I think John Sullivan used to be the finest comedy scriptwriter. I emphasise "used to be". Sullivan was inspired to become a writer when he heard that Spieght was earning a grand an episode for Till Death Us Do Part.
Yes that's quite true. He was also inspired that Speight came from such a poor family where he lived in poverty, started writing and went from the East End Slums to Mansions and Rolls Royce. Before Speight started writing he was a drummer and he regually played the drums in my home town, Moss Side Manchester. Also Geoffery Hughes has played the drums in what was my local in Moss Side.
You can watch the complete first episode of Johnny Speight's Curry and Chips on youtube.
