British Comedy Guide

Anglophile

I guess I should have introduced myself. I started watching British sitcoms on PBS when I was a kid thinking that I might get a glimpse of nudity on British TV. Alas, I was always disappointed with every episode of "Are You Being Served" that passed without seeing Miss Brahms' knickers.

My favourite single episode of any British sitcom is "Come on You Blues" of "The Thin Blue Line" (but I am still a British sitcom neophyte). I like "Little Britain," "The Mighty Boosh," and lots of older sitcoms. But my favourite show is "Spaced."

I am not very impressed with American sitcoms at the moment, with the exception of "Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

This is an interesting board, as I have always wondered about the impressions that other countries have about America based on television shows. I have been to England (mainly Scotland) for two different summers and really started appreciating British humour--which I don't think a lot of Americans do.

P.s. I will be using this board to practice my British slang, so correct me if I mistake my Geordie with my Cockney.

Welcome to the site. A very shrewd choice if I may say so, sir.

Nice to have another of our American cousins around.

Haven't heard of this US sitcom of which you speak. Do post in the foreign section about what it is/where it is.

'The Big Bang Theory' seems to be quite well-liked over here at the moment.

Other than 'The Office' there doesn't seem to be any heavyweight US network sitcom of note at the moment. I imagine the writers' strike must have pushed a few things back. Do tell us about anything worth looking out for.

All the best.

Hi Deckard... welcome.

Did they find lots of photos of Prince Charles, Fish & Chips and Cups of Tea on your hard drive?

Welcome Wave

Uhm, '30 Rock'? And hello to the person up top.

As long as you put enough swear words in, no-one will know the difference.

"A Pimms and a punt" = "I'll f**king have yer ya c**t!"

But my favourite show is "Spaced."

And you were doing so well... ;)

Please don't be getting the two confused!

But welcome. :)

Just be glad he didn't clump us with the rest of Europe; like France!

A headline from a English newspaper in the 1940s, which tells you all you need to know historically about our feelings about Europe...

"Fog In Channel - Continent Cut Off"

That was The Times, was it not?

I think you're right. One of my favourite headlines, which I first read about in Paxman's excellent book, The English.

What do you have against spaced? Did I reveal my Americanity by claiming it as my favourite show?
