Weird one

A while ago, as a character exercise, I wrote an episode of The Mighty Boosh. At that point it was purely an exercise.

Now I'm quite happy with it. I've got the appropriate feedback and I sent it off to their agent. It came back unread with a note to say they do their own writing.

Common sense says to file and forget? What d'you reckon?

Ta.

Um.....yeah if they write their own stuff then you may as well file and forget. Keep it though as it could come in handy in the future. All the best.

Well The Mighty Boosh would never do it - they really have to use their own voice. Why not take the jokes and do your own thang with it?

I think if you ever write episodes of existing shows - and I wouldn't - then I'd say write one of something like Two Pints or My Family. Then it might actually lead to you writing on the show.

I've thought about that Dolly. It's not my voice though, and the jokes come from their characters which are already established.

I know what you're saying, and I can't see why they'd want to give it a look.

Maybe I can stalk them - I can wait outside their house in a bin bag. I'll cut eye holes out and when I see his ankles I will....gotta go.

Exactly Chip - it was never a career-enhancing thing - it just went a bit better than I expected

What else are you going to do with it Rick?

You could probably use it if anyone wanted to see an example of how flexible your writing is to prove you can imitate another style.

Other than that... dunno. It's just fan fiction. You could set up a website I suppose. Depends how far you want to go with it.

'You could probably use it if anyone wanted to see an example of how flexible your writing is to prove you can imitate another style.'

That's a good idea - nice one.

Not quite sure how it being returned unread is it going 'better than expected'?
I suppose they could have sued.
Personally I'd file and forget.
These days, even when I think something is funny, if, in my heart, I know it's going nowhere I don't invest too much time in it.

Lazzard - better than expected refers to the writing of it. A better product that I imagined. Nowt to do with unread - that was expected.

They couldn't have sued. That's stupid.

Yep - that's where I'm leaning, but I could use it as an example of the adoption of other voices, as suggested earlier in the thread.

People do do stupid things Rick.

:)

They do indeed - bane of my life.

Until I do something stupid. Then they're momentary allies.

Sorry, I got the wrong end of the stick.
The sued bit was a joke.
Wave

Production Companies intentionally don't read scripts from new writers for existing shows - out of fear that if they accidentally did an episode that had a similar storyline to the one that was sent in, then the budding writer would start litigation proceedings on the basis that it was 'their' idea. If they don't read it, that can't happen.

Or so I've been told.

That is true.
I heard it too.
