No, but then Michael McIntyre is funny.
I saw a 'test gig' with Reginal D. Hunter a few years ago. Cost a tenner and there can't have been more than 20 of us. Excellent atmosphere, nice little venue (the tiny private screening room of a cinema), and best of all, very very funny. Once I've got a bit more cash and free time, I'll be checking out more of these warmup and test shows.
Oh, and re: that they should be free, Russell Howard, Al Murray and a couple of others do gratis ones. Think maybe Lee Mack.

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall Carr using a clipboard on one of the DVDs; could be that it was his 'thing' on that tour rather than a prompt in the way you seem to suggest.
