Jim & Joan : A Sign Of Robbery

A piece from a series of sketches I am working on with Jim & Joan. So much I can do with this, but would be nice to get some feedback on the idea and the sketch as it sits just now.

JIM & JOAN : A SIGN OF ROBBERY

JIM AND JOAN (50s) ENTER A BANK. JIM IS MASKED, WAVING A GUN AND HOLDING A BRIEFCASE, JOAN ALSO MASKED, HAS A LARGE RUCKSACK AND A GUN IN HER POCKET.

THEIR IS SILENCE AS JOAN CALMLY OPEN HER RUCKSACK. SHE REMOVES A GHETTOBLASTER AND PRESSES PLAY.

(FROM THE GHETTOBLASTER – PULP FICTION):
All right, everybody be cool, this is a robbery.

THE CROWD STAND SCARED. JIM NODS TO JOAN WHO PRESSES PLAY AGAIN.

(FROM THE GHETTOBLASTER – PULP FICTION):
Any of you f**king pricks move, and I'll execute every motherf**king last one of ya!

JIM NODS TO JOAN AGAIN. SHE PRESSES PLAY.

(FROM THE GHETTOBLASTER – MICHAEL JACKSON):
Get on the floor.

THE CROWD GET ON THE FLOOR. JIM WALKS OVER TO A MEMBER OF STAFF AND NODS TO JOAN TO PLAY THE GHETTOBLASTER AGAIN. JOAN PRESSES PLAY.

(FROM THE GHETTOBLASTER – JERRY MAGUIRE.):
Show me the money.

CUT TO: THE MEMBER OF BANK STAFF RETURNING WITH A BUNDLE OF CASH.

A WANNABE HERO STARTS RUNNING AT JIM.

CUT TO: JOAN QUICKLY CHANGING TAPES AND HITTING PLAY.

(FROM THE GHETTOBLASTER – SCARFACE.):
Say hello to my little friend. (followed by an array of gunshots)

THE WANNABE HERO DIVES TO THE FLOOR.

JOAN AND JIM MAKE FOR THE DOOR. JOAN INSERTS A FINAL TAPE ON EXIT.

WE HEAR THE LOONEY TUNES THEME TUNE.

(FROM THE GHETTOBLASTER.):
That's all folks.

CUT TO: JIM AND JOAN GETTING INTO A VAN, THE SIGNWRITING READS 'DEAF AND DUMB FOUNDATION'.

THE CROWD START TO FEEL SORRY FOR THEM AND WE HEAR AN ABUNDANCE OF AWE'S.

JOAN SWITCHES ON THE RADIO IN THE VAN AND PUTS IN A TAPE. IT'S QUEEN 'DON'T STOP ME NOW' – THEY BOTH START DANCING TO THE MUSIC.

JOAN & JIM:
We're having such a good time, we're having a ball!

END.

That's really good and well thought out, I like this alot.

Maybe could do with a little bit of a twist punch?

Thanks sooty. I'll consider changing the punch, will no doubt have many alterations before I finalise it. I have been pondering over it for a while.

I thought it was something you would appreciate.

I have a few more Jim & Joan robberies in the making.

This is tough for me to say, young Craig. But I found this part the funniest thing I have ever read on the BCG. Superb.

I also love the fact that you have bank robbers called Jim and Joan.

I Liked this one Craig.
It was really inventive & I could see it working well.

Thanks, Don. That is quite a compliment. :) I'm glad you like it.

I've got plenty more robberies in the works.

Thanks Fred. I can see it working well too, with the right actors it could be a very funny sketch.

Very funny sketch. I really enjoyed it. Like to see more.

Thanks Jules. I'm glad it made you laugh.

I thought that was very nice Craig, really well thought out. I was indulgently hoping for a final tape switch as they drive away with a bit of Hannibal Smith...."I love it when a plan comes together".

Hey Lord. Thanks for the kind words, glad you like it.

I actually had "I love it when a plan comes together" in the mix of things but took it out as I thought the singing/dancing idea was better and helped with the punchline.

Good stuff Craig

Thanks Craig, great minds I reckon!

I liked it but I was also confused a bit by it. Are Jim and Joan really deaf and dumb or is it just a ruse? If they aren't then the whole premise seems a bit off - how would they know this would work? - and if they are then the ending definitely fails.

I thought they might just be dumb and you would end up with various tapes being inserted as Joan "tells" Jim off for stalling the engine, or making a wrong turn.

In fact I think it would work without explaining any deaf/dumb bit - it's just a funny idea to have instructions done by tape. Lots of potential for inserting the wrong tapes and/or getting the tapes chewed up or unravelled.

Overall concept great but there is something nagging at me that says it doesn't quite hang together yet.

Thanks Badge. It wouldn't really be one of my sketches without someone being confused, would it? :D

The deaf/dumb bit made for a perfect ending - the sign on the van is to make the bank crowd & audience believe they are actually deaf and dumb - the punch being, they start dancing to Queen..and then we cut back to them actually singing along to it.

With regards to the wrong turn part - I actually had a part in about that too :D - where the sat nav woman is screaming at them and they are taking wrong turns - then we find out they are actualy blind too. Like I said I've chopped and changed so many things, cut it down etc - I just wanted some feedback on this so I knew where to take it next.

With regards to them KNOWING it was going to work, you shouldn't take them that seriously - as you will find out in the next episode.
