Current radio comedy... Page 28

I think Josie Long messed up her cutting by her keeping going on about liking people with more than one Christian name. She should just read what she brought along.

She was hopeless on The News Quiz, and I'm sure they only employ her because of her working class accent. In fact, I thought it was a pretty limp edition of the show overall. Then again, I do think The News Quiz is the weakest of all Radio 4's Friday night offerings.

A good episode of The Museum of Curiosity last night - good guests, especially the bloke on about Morphic Resonance - and another welcome step in the rehabilitation of Chris Addison after the Lab Rats debacle.

Yes, it was nice to hear them talking about morphic resonance again. The sheep rolling over the cattle grid can be exhibited next to the Sean Lock neck knot.

Not a bad Heresy last night, but it really needed David Mitchell. And as much as I like the Coren woman, I'm still not sure she's got what it takes to host a comedy show.

Not current but something I just listened to - Perry Pontac's Casual slaughters and Incurable Romantics.

Ever heard of him? Highly reccomended.

Nice episode of ElvenQuest tonight, although I do wonder about the obvious Lord of the Rings.

Yeah. And I hate to admit it, but the baddy's really growing on me now. I really like the interplay between him and his henchman. And I loved the Sirens having digs at the woman member of the team. Good stuff.

Catch-up, as I'm behind as usual

Old Harry's Game series 7 (the latest one): fab! Still the best radio sitcom for my money.
Josie Long: All The Planets Wonders... etc etc Good. I liked it and her humour. Never heard her stuff before but she's a little bit different.
Listened to the first series of One again, which was great, even on a second listen.

I thought it was the weakest series so far of the show. Nice stuff in it, but it felt like it was treading water to me.

My thoughts on the current batch:

Heresy: It's ok... but I agree with the comments above. They don't book enough comedians either - sometimes it gets too serious. For example, Clive James kept forgetting it was not a serious debate.

ElvenQuest: It's a little un-even, but I'm still very much enjoying it. Lord Darkness and Kreech are the best characters. Sophie Winkleman manages to sound hot even on the radio. Did anyone else notice that the voice of Amis the dog has changed? It was Dave Lamb providing the voice - but yesterday it changed to being James Bachman instead.

The Secret World: This impression show seems to have passed everyone by... but I really enjoyed it (although the last episode was weaker than previous episodes). Hearing 'Jools Holland' getting into difficulty each week certainly has been making me chuckle.

The Museum Of Curiosity: I really enjoy the intro part to this show, but when the panel start suggesting things to put into the museum the laughs tend to fade away.

The News Quiz: They did a better job of covering the expenses fiasco than HIGNFY did last Friday... however it just isn't The Now Show is it.

The Wilson Dixon Line: I'm not going to judge this until I've heard episode two.

I have to say though, the radio comedy I'm enjoying most at the moment is On The Blog (Radio 2 repeat). I didn't bother to listen to it when it first went out as the pun in the title put me off totally... but now I've heard it, I love it. The central character is great! Looking forward to the new third series coming later in the year.

Although there only seems to be five of us interested in this thread lets keep it going! It's my favourite thread on the website - love hearing what others think about the current crop so keep your thoughts coming.

You're right there Mark. It is just a few devoted followers of this thread that keep it alive. Hurrah for us!

I find your comments on The Museum of Curiosity interesting because many people think the complete opposite. Some want less of the chat and more of the show devoted to the items.

Curious. I hadn't noticed, but would be fascinated to know why they've changed actor.

I think it depends on the mix of guests. I do like hearing from these obscure highbrow experts, and some are quite interesting.

Also, anybody know when the new series of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue will be broadcast?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: On The Blog is great. Series 2 episode 1 is one of the best sitcom episodes of anything ever (especially if you do know the character of Andrew well!)

I'll be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of you saying it. :)

And once again, for all those of you reading and replying really quickly:

On The Blog is great.
Have you heard On The Blog? It's great.
That show on Radio 2, On The Blog: it's great!

<show fails to be great after massive build-up>
