Documentaries

Which ones are your favourites?

I just watched this one ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102015/ ) about the making of Apocalypse Now an I think it is possibly the best I've ever seen. Features recordings of Coppola in private completely unaware he's being recorded and all sorts, fascinating.

Honourable mentions go to pretty much every film by Errol Morris, Roger&Me (even if it's all biased lies), King of Kong (same) and Dear Zachary (same).

Also just got my hands on Michael Apted's Up Series which I've ridiculously high hopes for.

Anyone see Guy Maddin's 'My Winnipeg'?
A saw that recently and really liked it. Not your average documentary for sure.

Guy Maddin?! Fantastic!
Someone gave me an absolute ton of his stuff, is it worthwhile watching any of it? gimme names.

Sorry that's the only one I have ever seen. I really liked it though.

Touching The Void was great. :) Although I'm not sure if it's truly a documentary.

The Hamster Factory was very informative, a film about the making of Gilliams Twelve Monkeys.

Off the top of my head here are five very memorable documentaries I have seen and would recommend:

D.O.A. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082226/

The Devil and Daniel Johnston http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436231/

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117293/

New York Doll http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436629/

Cutting Edge: Brian's story http://ftvdb.bfi.org.uk/sift/title/704326

This is my favourite documentary:

It seems to be a bit of an unknown gem.

Which ones are your favourites?

Plenty. But only on TV.

(And the British Transport Films collection.)

Touching The Void

Who killed the Electric Car

I'll second New York Doll and add Dig!.

Imagine: John Lennon, surely. And The Aristocrats <clicks fingers, Drew Carey style>! And Hearts of Darkness was awesome on the big screen when I stupid student. Whereas the book Heart of Darkness by Joe Conrad was one of the dullest things I have ever read (obviously this was before I discovered BSG Forums).

I'd love to see a documentary about Gilliam's terrible luck.

I've got DiG! and Paradise Lost, but haven't got around to watching them yet.

I'd love to see a documentary about Gilliam's terrible luck.

Then get Lost in La Mancha - all about his ill-fated effort to make a Don Quixote film starring Johnny Depp. Since its failure, there was a not bad Quixote movie with John Lithgow and Bob Hoskins.

I watched Sounds Like Teen Spirit a couple of weeks back and it rocked several shades of cock.

Capturung the Friedmans, Spellbound, Hearts of Darkness, Some Kind of Monster and The Comedian are also well worth checking out, to name but a few.

You gotta watch Dig, man! It's bleedin' marvellous. Great tunes an' all.
