Congrats to all the winners. Simon, I hope you come on here long before next year's Trials to keep us all updated with their inevitable industry successes.
Sitcom Trials 2009 Page 16
Now that it's been officially announced, congratulations to Dean for winning the Trials with 'From Riga to Rotherham'. Let's hope it's the start of bigger and better things for him.
As previously mentioned, all of the finalists were excellent and I hope each of them are rewarded for their hard work and talent.
I am being far too kind and supportive, right, I'm off to kill some puppies.
Thanks James. Yet again this thread is turning into one massive love-in, but yet again I'll add to it. The whole competition has been fantastic and, as I said to some people last night, the standard has been so high throughout that there were many scripts that didn't make the final that could, on another day, have won.
One thing is for sure, and that's that Simon and Declan's efforts have ensured that the competition can rightly be viewed as an absolutely brilliant way of getting work seen by production companies and TV and radio comedy commissioners. I can't think of a better way for a new writer to get their work in front of these people. It certainly beats sending unsolicited scripts, that's for sure.
If you've got a sitcom script that you want industry people to see, then don't even think twice - enter this next year!
Well done guys!

It's a shame though that it's only an opportunity for stageable scripts!
How would you suggest they do it instead, Dolly?

I didn't mean it should be done differently, I meant it's just a shame if you mainly write scripts that wouldn't be suitable to stage live.
Hi Dolly. The thing is, most sitcoms have at least 15 minutes over an entire series that could conceivably be staged. I have loads of ideas for my own script that would involve external locations, but I just made sure that the 15 minute script that I entered was stageable. Even if you have to modify the idea a bit, it's still very much worthwhile.
I think it's as much about contacts as anything else DD. Everyone seemed to be having a grand old time yesterday after the show!
Congrats Dean btw!

Ah, being so shy and retiring and teetotal means I can't do that sort of thing!
<almost swallows own tongue laughing>

Thanks Dan!
Very well done!
"The judges choosing the best comedy last night were Lucy Lumsden (BBC Comedy Commissioner); Andrew Newman (Head of Entertainment at Channel 4); Michaela Hennessy-Vass (ITV Comedy Commissioner) and Jane Berthoud (Head of Comedy, BBC Radio)."
I'd like to add my congratulations to Dean for winning, and Si and Dec for setting it up and running it so well.
I think all the finalists (and clearly many of those that didn't make it to the final given the stuff that is happening with their scripts) were very high quality. Simon said that Lucy Lumsden commented to that effect too. It will be really intersting to see what comes of the contacts made.
Whatever, I've found it a really fun and positive experience with a lot of learning, and can't believe that I won't write better stuff as a result. definitely worth entering next year.
Congrats Dean
Well done to all the finalists, and everyone who got through to the knockout stages.
Were you in the final Ponderer ?
I found attending the final and really fun positive experience, until I left the theatre and Ponderer ran directly at me and scared the living shit out of me quite frankly.
He was trying to catch the door from locking. Apparently.
