British Comedy Guide

Old books

Sorry this is nothing to do with comedy but I live in a really old house in Germany, was clearing the attic and found a box of old books. Was quite well hidden probably to save them from the 1933 Nazi book burnings. Mostly German books but there are a few English books in there, are these worth anything?

Show Boat/Edna Ferber (First Edition)
Dear Enemy/Jean Webster (First Edition)
I Will Repay/Baroness Orczy (1908)
Pride and Prejudice/Jane Austen (1924)

Was thinking of Ebaying them.

Search for them on zvab.com and you'll get a good overview over the prices.

:)

I bet the Jane Austen would be!

I'd have thought the Jane Austen was the least likely to be worth anything. Huge number of copies world-wide.

Good point... was more the fact it was pretty old. :)

Thanks for the link Finck, looks like Show Boat is the winner.

Awesome, just looked at the page and it's 1924 about the 11th reprint, the woman must have sold billions of books.

What is it that makes British female Authors so popular?

Jane Austen
Bronte Sisters
J.K Rowling
William Shakespeare (think he was a cross dresser?)

Don't forget Radclyffe Hall. I'll bet it's a while since many of the female readers here have dipped into The Well of Loneliness.

No secret really :-) They just happen to write pretty well. In particular Willamena.

Modesty is very becoming

It's also a key character trait of the English.

Is that some sort of disgusting euphemism?

The novel has a sapphic theme.
