Writing for Newsjack (aka 7 on 7) Page 18

Recorded 31st May for broadcast on 4th June. That's the pilot and it's not open door - it's just so anyone who does want to send sketches in can get a feel for it. The first real episode is being broadcast on the 18th June, being recorded the night before.

I'm hoping it's not open door and just for those who got onto RFTP workshops.

Well I was invited to send more stuff in and I'm blacklisted from all workshops. :)

Tickets for Newsjack as it is now known are now available.

Tough.

They seemed extra careful to mention that it was completely open door, just so we didn't start thinking we were special or anything.

Which begs the question, what was the aim of the RFTP workshops other than a nice jolly day out for all concerned. Even if they only allowed those that went to workshops to submit stuff, they'd still be looking at a shedload of entries to sift through.

Because RFTP and 7on7 (or whatever it's called now) are different shows? I'm confused...

I guess what I was trying to say it makes sense to have open ended shows to draw in talent, but at som point it makes sense to narrow the entry qualifications so that only those who got a sketch on the open ended show, or a sketch recorded for it, get asked to submit. So you narrow the pool...or something. I'm getting confused now.

I can see what chipolata is saying.
i.e. why go to all the trouble of picking writers and going to the expense of workshopping and nurturing them (essentially creating a writing team) if the show is now going to be open door?

Unless the writing criteria will be 3-tier, i.e. 1st tier - experienced writers, 2nd tier - workshopped new writers, tier 3 - non comm writers, and that the priority will favour the top 2 tiers, the initial "contest" was essentially moot.

Of course, I'm chuffed it IS open door, but the above point is quite a valid one.

Er, point taken - but I thought a completely open-door show was what people (and especially people on this board) have been craving from the Beeb ever since Weekending breathed its last? Why should attendance at a workshop at HWH in any way qualify you for extra special treatment? If the producers are willing to open the door up to anyone, and go along with the sifting that comes with that, then fair play to them, I say.

Besides, it means that they can roll out the classic line Ed Morrish came out with during his pre-show address at the RFTP recordings when he told the audience: "This is an open-door show, so if you don't like what you see tonight then, well, it's kind of your fault."

Arf! Sadly, that got a bigger laugh than either of my sketches....

I think now people have been relatively successful one way or the other, they want a 'next step'. Getting into a scheme should lead to more stuff. Pripyat got on one and unfortunately it didn't pan out, but some of the others from the first couple of RFTP series have really got their foot in the door with regards to other stuff.

I guess what people ideally want is a regular 'open doors' show, a regular 'second step' show (that you eventually get invited 'up' to), then perhaps a couple of third step shows, where the more successful writers take more of a lead on stuff.

Success in an 'open doors' show unfortunately seems to lead nowhere. I, too, thought the workshops meant that these guys had been fast-tracked and at least the core writing would be from them lot, rather than open doors. As it happens, I'm glad it's open doors now, but if I'd got on to the workshops, I'd be a bit pissed off now!

Sorry, I'd forgotten about the whole 7 on 7 opp thing, I thought it was a reference to the more general workshop(s) held recently. I don't know anyone myself who went to the 7o7 workshops - I have no idea what they were told would happen as regards the writing team, so I can't comment.

Incidentally, do we have any names for producer/writers?

And as for the 'not panning out', young Dan..... well, er..... actually, yeah, you're pretty much spot on. I blame not living in London (seriously, it's a big help) and being one of the laziest people on the face of the planet.

There were 7 On 7 workshops and RFTP workshops. Interestingly, some of these were held on the very same day and, as far as I know, no-one got invited to both. Which I find suspicious if it's just a 'coincidence' that a whole bunch of decent writers weren't invited to both.

No offence meant, Prip. I hope you know that ;)

Young Dan

I think yesterday at least, they were the same workshop. A number of people in yesterday's group had got there via their 7 on 7 submissions rather than through RFTP. The workshop was just a general radio sketch comedy workshop, there wasn't any bias towards the brief for either show.
