Pllleeeease, for the love of God, put a space before the hyphen or use a semicolon!

* en dash, not a hyphen, in the context of Jack Massey's post.

(where is the emoticon signifying 'smug'?! smarm will have to suffice: Smarmy)

You could use

Thanks for the tip.

Arthur Spooner (played by Jerry Stiller), from The King of Queens is my favourite. I love his random rants. Actually, I've got a character in my sitcom who is a bit of an homage to him. By the way, if you're also a fan of Arthur, you might be interested in a little-known film, called The Independant, in which Jerry Stiller virtually plays the same character.

Oh, this is a hard one. There are many characters I am fond of - Captain Mainwaring, Victor Meldrew, Dr. Caroline Todd, Norman Stanley Fletcher, Arnold Rimmer and Marvin the Paranoid Android to name a few.

However, I think out of all the sitcom character, probably my favourite, or at least the one I would most like to be, would be Bernard Black. There is something strangely appealing about a chain-smoking, wine-guzzling, dirt-covered, violent, misanthropic Irishman.

Another character I'm keen on is Ian Dunn from the Radio 7 sitcom Knocker, but that is mainly because he happens to share my real name.

Captain Mainwaring for me. He was so wonderfully optimistic in even the most difficult of situations and he saw everything seriously and was very funny in his ways. But that was half the job, Arthur Lowe's performance took it to a much higher level, he had the character to a tee. He is a true legend.

Fact. Underneath all his bluster, he was an honourable man. He cared for the men under his command, and was genuinely courageous. The dude just plain rocks. Also mentioning Bob Fossill, for his one-liners.

Am surprised by for the main part the lack of modern american characters mentioned in this thread by far Larry David is the greatest sitcom character. The mere fact that he is rich and doesn't really care too much what people think of him means that he is far more likely to get into conflict with people and act extremely unpredictable hence every episode of CYE is always very very funny.

Hank Kingsley. Without him no 'Hey Now!' and no Darlene.

Ross from friends is another great character.

Simon the computer geek from The office

"I have seen him fight Chuck Norris in WAY of the dragon"

Alan Partidge. Just coz he's Alan Patridge basically.

Well there's the obvious such as Blackadder particularly in number 4 but I'd just like to mention Paul Eddington as Jerry Leadbetter in The Good Life. Beautifully underplayed part imo.

I been watching alot of Two And A Half Men lately and think Jake is excellent.

Apart from the obvious Blackadder himself, Rik Mayall as Lord Flashheart comes in as a close second to Hugh Laurie as Ludwig the German spy in Blackadder 2. Miranda Richardson as Queenie was the sexiest sitcom character ever.

Favourite characters would have to be
-Superhans from Peep Show- 80% of the stuff he says is utterly brilliant, Boycie from OFAH- he was so smug and snobbish but just couldn't help but like him and Robert from Evrybody loves Raymond- the giant loser with some cracking performances.
