I have seen plenty of real Americans, I used to live there. And while true, they do have a surfeit of larger people, they don't normally put them on the telly.
That's the difference you see, the Brits celebrate the ugly and vapid whereas the Americans celebrate the beautuiful and vapid. You can excuse a whole lot of dumb if it's pretty enough.
And to finally hammer my point home that the UK is a trout-fest, just compare our female politicians to the French, the Italians or the Americans. Name one female MP who is even vaguely do-able?

Well... maybe the main thing to be celebrated about people isn't whether they conform to some bizarre unrealistic image of 'beauty'...?
I see and agree with your initial point, English soap stars are often mingers, and would never get on American soaps.
But you seem to be saying the American way is better.
I reeeeeeeeeally don't think it is.
I'd much rather there were some ugly/fat/ordinary people on my telly.

From meeting many attractive women (well spying on them from a distance with my Junior Detective Periscope), some you take seriously and some you don't. I think most really unbelieveably hot and gorgeous women take the easy route - marry someone rich or become a model / actress / pop star - and then marry someone rich.
Of course, I'm generalising and there are always exceptions to the rule - like when I watch movies or play video games - the female scientist is always a smokin' hot 22 year old super model. So it must be true.
And zooo, I know where you are coming from, the Americans saturate their media with images of idealised physical perfection, which can make you quite depressed after a while.
Having said that, I'd rather see Pamela Anderson in a bathing suit then Heather Trott. 
I think the British have a snobby attitude about vanity and making an effort, that the French and Italians don't have. Therefore women who care about how they look are usually seen as shallow and stupid in British society.

I agree with you 100% Dolly, but don't forget to chuck in some good old fashioned British laziness in there as well.
The one that always gets me is when someone is being interviewed for the news, in America, Italy or France, they get their hair and make up done and wear some stylish clothes, whereas the Brits think it's perfectly acceptable to roll out of bed and whack on a scrunchy.

Reminds me of those 'housewives' doorstepped by the likes of Keith Chegwin at 6am when they're in their dressing gowns. They pretty much do the same thing but it's usually too late - we've seen 'em! I can't imagine that happening in France somehow.
