That reminds me of a question that came to mind while watching the last episode of The Inbetweeners. What's the difference between revision and plain ol' studying for an exam? I've never heard the term used that way before.

Revision is studying for an exam.

That's what it seemed like, but I couldn't figure out why they just didn't call it studying. I'm used to the word "revise" meaning "to change or alter."

Because, here at least, "studying" applies to any kind of academic work. "Revision" is specifically and exclusively used in relation to studying for exams.
