What is the best theme tune of a TV show? Page 8

Quote: Kenneth @ April 18 2009, 2:46 AM BST

Season 1 of George & Mildred had a theme tune that was fun and jaunty. Subsequent seasons had a theme that was quite different: light and tedious (and accompanied by very dull silhouettes in Season 4). My 'worst' ranking for G&M theme is based on the latter seasons.

Pah!

Oh, I quite liked that. Fits the show anyhow.

Me too. Good tune.

I'm often guilty of using the American spelling of 'series'. And I just remembered one of my favourite TV show themes: Q5-9 (the Spike Milligan series) piano and synth versions.

Z Cars
White Horses

Have all been said but you've all missed the best one of all.

Is there something about the question that confuses you?

:D

Ha, ha! No, it's just an indecison and indulgence thing, I'm a real nostalgic and get excited as each one pops into my head. I used to be very indecisive now I can't quite make my mind up...

Oh yeah, whilst I'm playing fast and loose with the whole concept I may aswell add an absolute favourite which I somehow overlooked....a tune that brings me back to childhood and carefree days.. Huckleberry Finn and his friends.

How about Noseybonk's signature music?

What is it with you and Noseybonk? Oh who am I kidding, I've become obsessed with Noseybonk ever since you first mentioned him last year. His signature music is very good too, yes.

It seems that the late 1960s through to early 1980s was a time of great creativity in childrens' TV themes in particular, I've already named many but that was forgetting gems such as Black Beauty, Pipkins, Ludwig and Bod. Perhaps it was something to do with a rich folk music tradition and perhaps some influence from a generation of young adults who'd experimented with drugs. It's a cod theory but some themes were quite off the wall although many were quite classical compositions having nothing to do with that. Sorry to move slightly off topic but kids' TV themes have always captivated and fascinated me.

Edited by Aaron.

Good point. There are some haunting themes to those shows.

Although Moschops favoured a kind of polka-blues style:

This theme used to scare the shite out of me as a kid. They re-ran some of them in the daytime and if I was off school on my own I was a jittery young Sir...

OMG Thriller! Not the best theme tune but it scared the crap out of me.

Don't think these have been put on:

Steptoe and Son
The League of Gentlemen

Don't know if it's been done already, but the theme tune to The Sopranos (Woke Up This Morning by Alabama 3) is incredible.

Only Fools and Horses
The Impressionable Jon Culshaw
Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle
