Political inertia is has been the route to this dictatorships.

I for one despise the self-perpetuating elite of this country

Then perhaps the plebs should educate themselves and get into politics.

Oh, wait, they have since 1997.

Quote: Rhubarb @ April 17 2009, 8:48 AM BST

proportional representation is long overdue

Ah, a Liberal Democrat.

my mum, who courtesies to the Queen when she appears on TV

I love the Queen, but that's taking it a bit far! :D

UKIP are idiots.

Yes they are. But they're nearing a stance that a hell of a lot of people can agree with, and it's one not being addressed sufficiently by the mainstream parties.

But no one has yet answered the question of whether we'd be better under DaveyC.

Better? No. We're too far f**ked by this Government for a future one to make any noticeable improvement, no matter what party they are. But we'd certainly be more along the right lines.

Proportional Representation would be a disaster. Italy has it- hardly a stable political system. Belgium has it- they were without a Government for 18 months at one point... Given that the UK flip-flops between left and right, the likelihood is that we'd be stuck with a permanent 'National Government'. It would also mean that the BNP would have representation in parliament along with lots of other minority groups. Which, on the surface, is fine and democratic, but ultimately thoroughly undemocratic- you end up in a situation where a minority group representing a fraction of the population has influence way beyond what their support warrants, with mainstream parties clamouring for support within Parliament.

As for the coming election- I can't wait. I never could understand what hold Nulab had over the electorate- Blair was a fake and an actor. This Government has introduced, or tried to introduce such fascistic legislation its astonishing. Their record is amazing- they can read all your emails and store them, they hold DNA records for people acquitted or never even charged, they have turned the Police into a branch of social services and criminalised the middle classes, they have smeared anyone who dares disagree, they stifle protest, they try to detain people without charge, they have been complicit in torture, they have supported and orchestrated an illegal war, they have made the UK a massive terrorist target, and strive to keep the population permanently terrified.
The Fraud Act 2006 actually criminalised the intent to commit of a fraud- in other words no 'crime' takes place; they have taken us into a Minority Report world where just thinking about committing a crime is illegal...

They allow Police into Parliament to arrest opposition MP's for leaks- a cursory browse of The Times website looking for references to Gordon Brown in the 1980's leads to a litany of reports of Brown presenting documents leaked from Government. The hypocricy is amazing.

The advent of the career politician has done for democracy- they join the students union, do a degree and then decide to go into politics as the pay is good- where is the desire to help people or serve the country? Its about gaining power and preserving that power. Gordon will NOT quit because its his turn now- the country can bugger off.

As for Labour vs Conservative- what reason is there to vote Labour anymore? Their record is more far right than Mrs T ever was. Many people say the Tories are just mad, evil, far right money-grabbers- even if you believe that, how does that differ to modern Labour? Labour supporters still cite Thatcher and the miners, with an attitude of 'never forget', but to many peoplethat's history and as relevant to the modern voter as Red Robbo at Longbridge, or sleeping bags on the night shift at British Leyland..

'Call Me Dave' says he has changed the Tories into the friendly, caring party and Labourites laugh at this, but its no less convincing than Blair revolutionising Labour.

Rant over.

Lovey Lovey Lovey Lovey Lovey

I'm in danger here of moving far away from the spirit of the forum – comedy, but just have to say –

Calculate the loss to the taxpayer of corporate tax evasion and fraud, then compare this to the cost of immigration. Then ask yourself why the corporations are pissing themselves laughing all the way to the bank – while we slag off the Poles.

A very good point, sir, and one that could be made about benefit fraud as well. Not that benefit fraud is right (done it myself in a very small way) but with what's gone on with the banks (tax evasion and the bail-outs) perhaps we're now seeing it in context.

It chilled me to read that the photographers who caught policemen beating protestors were breaking abit of Newlab legislation on photogrpahing policemen.

Amd Thatcher was hugely progressive and modernising in some ways. Care in the Community was hugely modern and humane.

Talking about left and right as good and bad is silly.

Thing is does any one think of Dave as any less of an actor than Pony Tony?

Well David Cameron wasn't converted to his party by his wife, so he's got a better start.

Hmm more developments on this front.

Boris Johnson seems to be seen generally as a good mayor of London and may yet got for the leadership of the party.

And Alan Sugar maybe an independent (conservative?) Mayor of London,

Is it me or does the next few years political history feel like it's been already written?

I don't think our future is set in stone just yet, but there a number of points upon which there isn't really much except inevitability. It's certainly going to be an interesting 18 months or so.

There's mutterings that Labour could eject Gordy after a disasterous showing in the European elections.

When the Conservatives did a similar thing with Thatcher they had another term under Major. There were mutterings if the econom hadn't tanked they might have still held on.

I wander if we might yet end up with a coalition government.

It doesn't matter who gets in next. Labour redesigned themselves as the new Conservatives the Conservatives have redesigned themselves as New Labour and if UKIP think that removing this country from the European Community is a good idea then they are sadly deluded. Oh and for God's sake bring in the Euro so we can stop fart arsing around with exchanging money every time we want to step on to the continent.

It is all a bit of a mess isn't it? I feel quite sorry for those BNP types in their itchy suits, being forced to be polite so they can win one measily European Parliament seat.

European election in next few days is every one remembering to vote?

C'mon it'll be a laugh. I reckon if we all vote silly parties and independents we can stuff the EU with hilarious EMPs, it'll turn the news into a new comedy show.

Sootyj will be voting for a rapping boxer or the LibDems not sure which is dafter.

No it won't. After Friday's results nobody gives a toss what goes on in the European parliament, and our news media certainly don't cover it. If they did, the UKIP clowns wouldn't be about to do as well as they are.

I dunno if we vote "nudists for punching Angela Merkel in the tits," or "Freedom to fart noisily in important debates," it could be quite fun.
