British Comedy Guide

Chick flicks ain't what they used to be.

I declare as of the last 10 years chick flicks have gone down hill massively.

Pre2000ish we have; Pretty Woman, Working Girl, His Girl Friday, Georgie Girl, 4 Weddings and a Funeral, Baby Boom etc.

Post 2000ish we have; The Holiday, Brigette Jone's Diary, Notting Hill, The Devil wears Prada.

What went wrong?

Notting Hill wasn't bad and even Love Actually had its moments but in terms of what went wrong? Feminism, not that feminism is a bad thing, I just think chick flicks are aimed at a completly different women now, is the 21st century women looking for the man to be the hero and sweep her off her feet or is the man, in fact, a secondary character all together and the fact that she makes it on her own more important than the romance?

Some of the films you mention post 2000 are pretty good. Like Bridget Jones Diary, Notting Hill and The Devil Wears Prada. Mean Girls is also another excellent recent chic flick.

Mean Girls is a good flick.

Mean Girls is a good flick.

Ah, remember when Lindsey Lohan had a future.

Mean Girls is no chick flick!

Notting Hill is horrible.

Mean Girls is no chick flick!

How would you define chic flick? For me, it's a film that will appeal predominantly to a female demographic. And I'd put Mean Girls into this catergory, even though I as a manly man also enjoyed it.

Notting Hill is horrible.

Compared to Richard Curtis's latest offering, it's a masterpiece.

Well Mean Girls is more of a John Hughes style teen dramedy.
But point taken the lines aren't clear.
Notting Hill isn't really a chick flick either.

I would classify something like Made Of Honour/27 Dresses/Forgetting Sarah Marshall as a modern chick flick.

Chick flick means 'romantic comedy with female lead character'?

Sounds pretty good albeit that discounts Notting Hill.
Which also seems fair.

Oops, I just remembered Thelma & Louise, which is undoubtedly a "chick flick" and certainly not a romantic comedy. Likewise Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes.

EDIT: Wikipedia to the rescue (confirming the veracity of Mr Chipolata's above post): Chick flick (also "chick's flick") is slang for a film designed to appeal to a female target audience. The term was first used in the 1980s[citation needed], a decade during which such chick flicks as Beaches were released. Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (though not necessarily romantic). It is typically not used for high art, feminist subject matter, or romantic comedies intended for a wider audience (such as the 2005 film Wedding Crashers and Fever Pitch).

Chick flick means 'romantic comedy with female lead character'?

Surely that's a rom-com? Which does have a heavy female fanbase.

And not all chickflicks are romance centered.

And it's all guys in this thread does this make us like totally gay or something?

(yes)
