A show about a group of superhero types that travelled round on a bus, I think they were a band as well. I seem to remember a song about truth and justice for all. Mighty sword of justice ? Maybe this was all a bad dream or several shows blended into one.

Sounds like The A-Team. Except it was a black van with red trim, not a bus. And they weren't a band. And there was no sword of justice.
It was a a mixture of 'Summer Holiday', 'Spinal Tap' and 'The Empire Strikes Back'. I think it was entitled 'Bus Trek' - or was it 'Spinal Destination'?
I vaguely recall The Greatest American Hero starring William Katt. Could this be it?

So there really was a show called Glam Metal Detectives! Looking at two parts on YouTube, it certainly looks like it was different, daft and fun.
