Exactly. Perfectly said.

So is it ok to watch someone get killed by a zombie, but not by a torturer?

Def.

Yes. Because, and I hate to break it to you, zombie films aren't painfully realistic.

Old horror films are best. The Shining, Holloween; good stuff.

Oh! The twins! :O

But I'd argue films like Hostel and Saw aren't particularly realistic. In the Saw franchise we're asked to believe that some bloke with terminal cancer has created these fiendishly cruel and clever games, built the equipment for them, and then kidnapped people to take part in them. People he has studied closely to judge who is wasting their lives.

That's true, but I would say the gore in Hostel etc. is more realistic.

Zombie attacks are way down in my neck of the woods. Hope you can say the same. :)

Well, I don't really mean the plot lines are realistic. But the scenes of actual violence are very full on and look real, you feel like you're experiencing it with them.

Whereas in zombie films the violence is gross and scary, but silly at the same time.

It is. But I'd argue as a genre it hasn't got the legs of the zombie genre. Zombie films will be with us for years to come, Torture Porn is a fad that will die out pretty fast. Especially as so many of them are dire films.

But sometimes it's fun to watch painfully realistic violence. It cleanses the palette.

Didn't the writer, or one of the writers say he researched medieval torture devices? Just a blip I read somewhere. That's the thing with filmic torture - there's the chance that you are watching something that happened to somebody.

'You feel like you are experiencing it with them'. So hasn't the director done their job properly in that case? If you can feel for the victim and be repulsed by what is happening to them then the film has managed to stir your emotions, which is what a horror film should do in some form. It doesn't mean you have to enjoy what you see, it means the content has effected you somehow. Some people like having their emotions tested while others do not.

Incidently, did you know that most of the violence in Hostel is implied or shown off screen? The director, Eli Roth managed to put the film together in such a way that the viewer remembers full on screen gore throughout whereas only a portion was 'in your face' so to speak.

Def.

I haven't given a value judgement on the films, I'm not saying the directors haven't done exactly what they wanted to. I'm saying I don't have the taste for it that I may once have had.

And Hitchcock used to do the whole implied violence thing, years ago.

Sootyj may have a lollipop with 'Lick me' on it. ;)

And you may have an arse with kick me on it?

Only if your lollipop's up it. (you know you want to)

The Hammer films were quite sexy.

And if you watch some of them again, it's amazing how graphically violent they could be, getting away with it purely because the blood looked so unrealistic.

Although when you see blood in real life it never looks realistic.

Sigh married for 20 years and it's still like that nervous first night in prison.
