Quote: Dolly Dagger @ April 16 2009, 12:25 PM BSTSooty, I suffer from depression. What I mean is that I believe pyschopaths, etc are made and not born. It's their early life that shapes them. If we took more effort in this country over the early years of children, poverty and education there's be a lot more stable people around who are not dangerous, violent or have fantasies of being so.
Interesting example of the nature nurture debate. Do I watch torture porn because I'm a psychopath or does it make me into a pyschopath?
Personally I reckon it exacerbates preexisting tendencies.
The problem for me is we're all entitled to a fantasy life.
And we're far too quick to pathologise antisocial behaviour. If I rob cars and hit people becuase I had a rough childhood, it doesn't make me sick more unfortunate. But still deserving of help.
N.B. we've always been a sick species God knows Hostel's better than Bear baiting.

And you may have an arse with kick me on it?
I used to love horror films, but I hardly ever watch them now. Maybe it is due to getting older, I don't know.
I find that I might think I want to watch Saw etc, but then when I'm actually watching them I'm just waiting for it to be over. So the idea of it is more appealing than the actuality. Or something.
I do still love zombie films and to a lesser extent vampire films though. Maybe because they're usually funny and a bit ridiculous. Not just disturbing and gory for the sake of it.
I enjoy horror films, particularly zombie films. It seems to me that torture porn does something different to most horrors, even gory video nasties - it crosses a line by dwelling on realistic scenes of an individual's torment, for sadistic purposes. On the whole, horror films don't normally dwell on such things, you have a gory set piece and then the story moves on, so it's just part of the story, usually a fantasy-based story. The torture porn goes out of it's way to be nasty, sadist and realistic. I can watch them, but regard such scenes as something to accept rather than enjoy, as one might enjoy the fantasy gore of say, a zombie film.

To be fair, you've got a Horror Boyfriend for all your squirmy shuddery needs.

I've been into vampire films ever since I was a child. I think in part because I was so sickly. I could identify with both the vampire and the victim. Hammer vampires are so glamorous and everything looks so rich in Eastman Colour.
Also there was a spate of werewolf movies in the early 1980s that were quite good. Still love DOTD, especially the escalator zombies and the zombie in the fountain with coins.

Only when he dresses up in that clown costume and goes out murdering.

Exactly. Perfectly said.

When you inevitably dump him he probably will turn to murder. He's got Offender Profile stamped all over him.

Why does that have the ring of truth about it . . ?

Ooh yes, Hammer horrors are great.
I do still watch old (pre 1990 I guess that means) horror films when they come on TV.
It's just new ones I tend to avoid now.
The Hammer films were quite sexy.

Yeah, but how often does John Wayne Gacy day come up?
Old horror films are best. The Shining, Holloween; good stuff.
