To be honest I have just not seen any signs of favouritism, or even disfavouritism, which would be more likely. But even if I had I think this is an instance of the taking part being a lot more important than the winning.

Just shorten it a little, tighten it up, maybe?
Something like: "It's the taking part that counts".
