What is the best season of Seinfeld?

I bought season one on DVD a couple of years back. I just couldn't get into it. I got to the point where I was forcing myself to watch it thinking that I must like it as loads of other people did.

I just couldn't take to the Seinfeld character, didnt find him funny. What is the best season so I can see it at its best?

Start with episode three of season 4.

Honestly, if you're a newbie to it, avoid the first series or two to start with. Get series three or four and you should start to see why it's so highly regarded.

Ok I will do. Series 4 is on its way to me now.

Still best to watch from the start though I feel.

But Season 4-7 was Seinfeld at its best.

I heard that when Larry David left it went downhill quite quickly.

I thought the last two seasons (minus Larry David) were the best.

I personally wouldn't agree. You could argue the show changed a bit, but I still think it was fantastic; there was no nosedive in quality.

5, 8, 4 and 6 are my absolute favourites- in that order. It's all great, though. The first two seasons saw the show finding its feet somewhat, not as genius as the rest, but they have their moments nonetheless.

The last two seasons are definitely more over-the-top, but still brilliant.

Not at all. The final two seasons are both great, 8 is my 2nd fave season of them all. I think David's departure allowed the other writers more free-rein to explore more surreal and fantasy based storylines. It was zanier than ever during that time, but for me it was a change in the show that absolutely worked. Some episodes from those seasons were amongst the shows very finest.

I saw an interview with Jason Alexander who said that his character wasn't as good after LD left the show. This is obviously because George Costanza was Larry David.

Nah, his character was great right until the end. The impact of David leaving is overstated by some fans; the show didn't suffer, it stayed brilliant.

That's good to know. The reason I couldn't get into was mainly because I couldn't take to the Seinfeld character. I didn't find him funny, nothing about him was funny to me.

Think I wrote about that somewhere else on this site - part of the fun of the show:

For ages Jerry was the thing I liked least about that show - then it struck me:
It's a sitcom called 'Seinfeld'. About a comedian called Jerry Seinfeld. Played by the comedian Jerry Seinfeld. And the role he plays in the sitcom? Straight man. Genius.
