Well for your info you've just come 4th in a script comp there. Okay so it's not first but you've obviously beaten others to it so like Frankie says, be cool.

Jolly good, Like I said I cooled down since my post but I stand by the core of what I was saying... just going to post here and there and just try not to let it stress me out as I used to a lot, I read somewhere the comedy ego is very fragile and that very much describes my comedy ego!

And frankie we both have valid arguements towards 4laughs (bluntly) being shit and 4laughs (bluntly) being the best thing since sliced bread. To some up what I'm trying to say is, 4laughs is saying and has said in the past that commissioners and very important people that can make you famous are and have looked at our stuff, but like I said yeilding stuff was great but 4laughs wouldn't touch it with a commissioning barge pole.

Fair do's Paul...

Like I say I still like the 4laughs site and hope there is still some mileage in it ... but I recognise it's just one site... and this is another... and there are others...

Onwards and upwards (if we can) m8!

In a wee moment of unusual seriousness ... I think part of the problem is that 'new' writers don't have a unified voice. There is quite a lot of good 'new' stuff that appears here, but it's embedded in a certain amount of rushed together-crap (some of that's mine too!). What we could do is sort out between ourselves what we think is the best from what we are producing and get it put in a forum section all of its own. Maybe then 'someone' might spot it ... and 'someone' might decide to pick it up. Needs a bit of organising but must beat turning out endless stuff willy-nilly.

That is what 4laughs TRIES to do via it's Comedy Ladder ... points get awarded for submissions and then those users feature on the ladder so that visitors to the site can see who is getting most points and presumably is producing the best stuff...

BUT as comedy is SUBJECTIVE who is going to decide which scripts are best... on 4laughs they tried to get around this by having users voting for their favourites, trouble is they didn't manage that very well in their software and also users were generally too idle, too busy or too confused/dismayed by the voting mechanism to vote.

Also, it may have been better for the points to have been awarded to the piece of work rather than the contributor so that the ladder contained 'pieces by contributors' rather than 'contributors'...

Maybe BSG could organise something that would work better... also there's plenty of people on here critcising 4laughs so OK those guys/gals, show us how it should be done!

..er, but can we have 'walk the walk' as well as 'talk the talk' please!!!

I don't think any of us are backed by Channel 4 so thats a little unfair.

Well, if it's unfair then I apologise... it wasn't meant to be unfair... just a dig at those folks who like to 'mouth off' and criticise but don't actually DO anything to help... as I recall that's not you as you offered to help the 4laughs web developers out...

:)

Do the organisers/owners of the BSG site think there is any merit in losaavedra's idea of having a section of the site dedicated to 'voted for' sketches (or something similar)? "A best of the sketches on BSG" type thing?

Some of us are looking for places to showcase our work other than just our own websites in that old chesnut of a vain hope of 'getting somewhere', and as losaavedra says on BSG there is just one big mass of stuff for people to plough through and once your stuff has gone down the critique pile it's sort of buried...

Just a thought people! :)

Yes this is good but how do I easily find the winning sketches so I can read them?

When I can be bothered, I will be gathering all the winning sketches together to form a sketch show of some sorts.

I'm not sure if it's happening or I or someone else have just suggested it(bad memory), but when the site relaunches, there should be a rating system for the readers to vote on and compiled leader boards.

Hi Frankie, firstly I don't think its fair to compare the BSG with 4laughs. Secondly maybe you should have a more detailed look at the site before you make sweeping inaccurate generalisations. We have the BSG Sketch Project, BSG Sitcom Project, the BSG Podcast Project and the BSG Sketch Competition all created by memebers who walked the walk and unlike you did not just talk the talk as you put it unless you have organised something we are not aware of. The links are below.

AJP:

OK mate I'll have a closer look at these threads, I have seen them. I did enter a sketch competition on one thread, the theme was 'Family'.

Sorry if I touched a nerve mate, I am 'walking the walk' in my own way (I think).

As for comparing 4laughs to BSG, why wouldn't I compare web sites with one another? Both sites would seem to have something to offer. It's normal to compare, geezer...

I must admit though that I am pissed off with some posters on here criticising 4laughs like 4laughs has 'done them wrong' or something... which I don't see how it can have...

4Laughs is a site to "find new talent".

British Sitcom Guide is a site to celebrate sitcom and general comedy. The writers section is an added bonus.

That's a point, I hadn't really seen it that way... in fact I was looking at it that the writers section is the 'meat' of the site and celebrating sitcom and general comedy was the add-on!

:$

I can't really comment on 4Laughs as I'm not a member of that site however it clearly has something to offer some people.

As Leevil says, this site's main aim is to celebrate British sitcom TV programmes (our new site will expand that remit to all forms of British comedy) - the writers bit has just been tagged on the edge - as a result we don't really offer the same things as 4Laughs.

Just to say though - our long-term plan is to offer writers some similar functionality to 4Laughs. We're going to be making it easier for you writers to interact with each other and the various BSG sketch, sitcom, podcast, competition and other writers projects that have been set up.

This will encompass various things - one of which will be the ability to upload your various material (scripts, videos, animations) on to the website to form a portfolio kind of thing. Plus there'll be voting etc.

The pro of our site is the legal small print (no iffy hidden copyright stuff), the negative is that we can't hand out prizes like 4Laughs do.

Mark - thanks for that - I appreciate your comments!

Here's a clue to how a section of the contributors on 4laughs see it...

It's NOT the monetary prizes or 'stuff' (DVD's, cameras, etc.) it's the RECOGNITION via the points/Comedy Ladder mechanism, coupled with the ability to profile and showcase ourselves... if BSG can offer something like that it would certainly be attractive to my group.

With 4laughs we can say, 'look at our position and profile on 4laughs' ... OK, it's not much, but it's something, and when you previously had nothing, it matters...

After that it's the networking but that seems to be working well on BSG already witness the various projects.

I certainly intend to try to get to know the BSG site better and if I didn't think you had a good site already I wouldn't be here now.

Cheers,

Frankie xxx

A broken website has done a few people wrong, plus it seems to not offer writers much as they like videos and audio clips.

I don't like this 'if you don't like it do something better or shut it' attitude, that isn't my point. My point is if you are going to do something do it properly and get the basics right.
