Which is why I find stereotyping of entire nationalities and sexualities lazy and depressing, and crucially, not very funny. But I'm aware I may be in a minority on this. Stereotyping just doesn't tickle my funny-bone.

It works as a sort of shorthand for a quick laugh, but ultimately has no depth and isn't satisfying. Inverted stereo-types (the effeminate heterosexual, etc) have more depth and are more satisfying (cue inneundo).

Seems you can get away with anything as long as it's ironic.

He wasn't being ironic though, he was just doing a stupid play on words. Ironic in the sense that it was obviously a stupid joke I suppose, but there was nothing to 'get away' with. Neither jokes should have caused anyone but the terminally touchy any offence, because they wern't in the least bit offensive.

because the irony means you don't really mean it and are pointing out the flaws of the original concept.

A world without Julian Clarie would be a far lesser and much less funny world.

Yeah, that titan of comedy Clary!

Stewart Lee was being ironic, wasn't he?
N.B. with regards to the David Jason joke no one was offended as far as I can tell. It was a standard and rather dull tabloid media panic.
It's more he broke the rules of the show he was on and could have caused offence.
Close to Titmarsh saying c**t on gardeners world than actual offensiveness.

Yeah, that titan of comedy Clary!

He was ace when he had Fanny the Wonder Dog and Meet the Rent Boy was fun.

In an idealised world I'd agree with you. But when a bum hole like Jim Davidson starts claiming to be ironic (which he has), then I start to realise that not all ironic dogs bark the same tune.

I only though so in the sense that it was a stupid joke, I'm not sure he would actually think he was saying anything potentially offensive. Though it's the type of non offensive thing that, as the Jason thing shows us, people who don't understand the meaning of political correctness find offensive. So maybe you're right.

.. then I start to relaise that not all ironic dogs bark the same tune.

ROTTWEILER:
Woof!

POODLE:
Woof! Woof. Grrr.

ROTTWEILER:
Woof?

POODLE:
I was being ironic, you twat...

(Apologies for sweeping generalisations about stupid Rottweilers, in that joke. Some of my best friends are dog-racist...)

Jim Davidson

Yeah, but he's obviously just lying!

Nice joke swertyd.

It's just interesting that if I took his whole act and did it dressed as Hitler in an exagerated manner and shouting. I'd be ironic and could do my routine at the Liberal party conference.
It's the same joke.

Nice joke swertyd.

It wasn't supposed to be *funny*. I was being *ironic*.

<folds in on himself in some sort of irony infinite-loop that creates a black hole, ending the racism/irony debate forever>

Cheers, btw ;)

Well, the important thing is the intention behind the material isn't it.

It's the same joke.

But then it wouldn't be the same joke.

As Frank Carson used to say, "I'll bomb the fecking lot of yous".

The one without the gannet?

Well same script then.

I think I try and avoid irony, cos I'm not convinced I can be clear enough in what I'm saying.
That said I love exageration.

Very Freudian...
