My ex-girlfriend just phoned me in tears. She'd just landed in Oklahoma City for a job interview at a university and got a call from her vet saying that her dog died overnight. It wasn't the 15-year-old Pomeranian with the infected foot that has been in and out of the vet's office for the last 3 weeks, rather it was her 4-year-old Shih Tzu who had been acting a little under the weather for the last few days.
Now the poor woman has to hold it together during 2 days of interviews while beating herself up for leaving the dog behind to die alone. And her Pom isn't exactly out of danger either.

I hope you explained to her that if you'd still been together this would never have happened. It's never tragic enough to score a few points in my opinion.
