They are both the correct spelling. However, I did live in the USA for a long time, so my spelling can sometimes drift backwards and forwards pond wise.

I didn't know that the character is known as Wally in the UK. In the U.S. he's always been called Waldo.

Was there another character called Wally in late-1980s US culture? I've never been able to come up with a reason as to why your lot renamed him.
