OK, I just watched the second one of these. A bit disappointing. It seems they don't know how to end certain sketches and it looks like they 'borrowed' a few ideas.

Does anybody know the viewing figures for the second episode?
Just caught some bits from ep 2 on iPlayer, how did the "office" chacter get on screen without someone suggesting Merchant and Gervais may want a cut? It was as though it had been made by people that thought The Office was good but would be better with some swearing in it.

After seeing the episode I agree. They need more experienced sketch writers I think (I don't know if it's solely written by Horne & Corden or if anyone else has extra input) but it can only help. There was certainly some borrowing of ideas in that second episode, as someone else just said about The Office character with the boasting.
I see their film is getting a sound trashing too now. Ouch.

I can't say I'm surprised. I know films nowadays absolutely have to have quotes and 5 star reviews all over them but it's not particularly inspiring that the ones for Lesbian Vampire Killers came from Nuts and the Daily Star.
Its ironic that he plays Ricky Gervais so well as now he seems to be hated just as much by certain groups of people.

Corden needs to learn a bit of the quality control that Gervais has and restrain himself from doing rubbish.
Gervais is not like Corden - for a start he is genuinely witty and amusing, and his 'arrogance' is just for comic effect. Corden is an arse - he's taken Gervais superficially and distilled the less subtle aspects. I watched Politics again last night and it really is very funny. Could Corden be funny for an hour?

I don't think they are the same either but they are being disliked with the same amount of venom by their detractors at the moment.
I wouldn't say so- even Gervais' detractors would concede he can be funny and has produced two excellent series. Cordens just shot his bolt.

Well, not the ones who do actually hate him though, obviously.
This second episode was mainly poor, but I still sort of enjoy it because I find them, as a pairing, quite likeable. It's just a shame the material so far isn't backing up that promise.
Though.....when Gervais was the age Corden is he was a complete unknown....he also went through a grim phase with his "Ricky Meets..." nonsense.
Given that Gervais' arrogant "act" is fuelled by a monster ego he could well have been as a big a tool as Corden if he'd found fame before he was 40!
Just bear with Corden for 10 more years. 
(Assuming his "hilarious" belly doesn't give him an MI before then.)

But it's also fuelled by people loving it the other way....we are always on the lookout for the next big thing. Pop stars (as an example) don't become such after 10 years of gigging in dark clubs, they are heroes within weeks of applying to be on xyz show.
If you build anything too quickly it will have shaky foundations!
