I should point out that I was thinking specifically of WWII military. The latter, Spitfire pilots, are as close to heroes as it f**king gets.

But the reason they do what they do is academic the fact is they do put their lives on the line.

Well whatever their reasons, most at least do pretty heroic things.

Sometimes it's what needed to get the job done. It's not pretty. It not ideal but it's how it is.

It doesn't matter why they joined, soldiers will lay their lives down for their fellow soldiers, their nation and civilians. I don't think anyone who hasn't served will ever fully understand it.
