Horne & Corden Page 17

I watched the repeat last night, a couple of bits made me smile and I'll try to catch it next time if I'm in.
I just hope they don't keep using the word "textbook" to describe something perfect or good.
Ok I only counted it three times but that was enough.

It was very funny in the Day Today when Alan Partridge used it to describe the Greg Louganis Dive where he hits his head on the board.

" Greg Louganis... Down, Double back twister, bangs his head and in. Textbook. Lovely."

Textbook counting there, Fred.

Textbook counting there, Fred.

Was that in the schoolroom sketch?

And if it weren't for this show kids wouldn't make fun of gayness? :S

No, they always will. But they don't need encouragement as it isn't funny is it?

It is a bit.

It would have been funnier if it was. ;)

That particular sketch was one of the better ones.

But come on ... sports? Really?

Yeah - it is my job. I watch about 35 hours of football, cricket, boxing etc... a week - it's tough, dirty work but someone has to do it.

I imagine there are people on here for whom the idea of being a sport reporter would be some sort of hell!

Anyway - sorry for being a bit overly forthright, and sidetracking the thread.

To show my contrition I will even use a little smiley character for the first time in my life: Wave

Me, mainly!

Was that in the schoolroom sketch?

Twice in the schoolroom sketch, and once in the race sketch.

That was my little joke Fred, textbook counting as in counting textbooks!

:)

I often wonder what Jack Delaney would make of you, Marc. :)

My mistake

I wasn't paying attention properly.
Work getting in the way of the internet yet again

I watched this on the iPlayer. I'm pretty ambivalent about Horne and Corden and I didn't want this show to fail: quite the opposite.

I can't be bothered to pour scorn on the show itself but you could see H&C being groomed to follow a career trajectory not dis-similar to that of Frost & Pegg (but the kingmakers seemed to forget those two had Edgar Wright and Jessica Stevenson bumping up the talent quota).

Did the producers get a team of established writers in for this? If not why not?

Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread but the awfulness of this show might be good for future quality control of sketch shows on BBC Three. That's not to say it's any worse than yer Scallywaggas and Little Miss Jocelyns but the fact it's been so hyped and failed to deliver (thus far, and in my opinion).

Thank you Horne and Corden for saving the sketch show ?

It got a record audience for BBC 3. Obviously that could drop a lot.

Yep record for BBC Three alright - but what an indictment of BBC Three when 817,000 represents record breaking territory for them.

And it gets weirder. Even the critics have noticed they're practically pushing each other for pole position to slag H&C off, one has even compiled a list of all the dailies that stuck it big-time to H&C that day - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/organgrinder/2009/mar/11/first-night-horne-corden

Couldn't wait, so iPlayered the show. Maybe by reading all the downbeat reviews of the show it had pre-empted and cleaned me out beforehand, because if I had been the first in the country to see it I'd have to report I found it . . . a bit flat - but that's all. It's not something I'd particularly seek out again, but I've surprised myself after reading the many postings of dislike about the show that on a couple of occasions I actually laughed out loud - OMGod! If everybody's right, and it is crap - what does that say about me?

I laughed out loud at the 'I'm coming' skit. Probably because I'd read an interview where he said that before fame and fortune, no one ever mentioned his weight and he got just as many girlfriends as his mates and they'd never mentioned it either - he himself being 'unaware' of his weight. I thought: no way yuh fat bastard! But the sketch of him throwing the girl's legs about to the left/ then to the right like she was a toy doll, and the expression on the girl's face while this was going on, had me laughing out loud. More in shock at the realisation that he probably can procreate then.

The other time was when the runners passed him on both the left and the right and he said something like: 'F**king hell!' in disappointment. Not a strong punch-line but it had me laughing, as in: yeah, yuh f**king fat bastard!

Do sketch shows open with their best, all in the opener? If so, then it's bad news; but they could yet surprise - didn't he (the fat one), contribute to Peep Show at one point? Don't think they would have garnered such poor reviews if they hadn't built up huge expectations with all the awards haul they trawled-in for Gavin and Stacey. And once at the top (i.e. no further travel upwards), if you don't at least maintain that position as a bare minimum, what other direction of travel is left?
