ITV - What's the point? Page 2

I wonder why Four haven't yet tried to capitalise on Hill's sudden popularity and released the show?

I'm pretty sure it was lined up for a release at one point, but it never happened.

ITV have had their moments, but right now it's hard to disagree with the thought that someone should pull the chain and flush it away.

We need a strong independant sector to challenge the might of the BBC. We haven't got one, but we need one.

ITV have to appeal to the masses, otherwise they'd fold. C4 can be a bit more leftfield because it's in their remit when they were given a broadcasting licence.

The BBC can afford to mess about with new ideas because A: They have a guaranteed income and B: They have lots of other channels and the radio as a testing ground.

That's the theory, but the practice is somewhat different.

Probably rights. I assume that he's got a golden-handcuffs type contract with ITV, limiting the sale of any of his material elsewhere.

Good/notable ITV things: The New Statesman, Man About The House, George & Mildred, Jeeves & Wooster, Mr Bean, The Benny Hill Show, Hale & Pace, Outside Edge, Love Thy Neighbour, the Doctor series, Only When I Laugh, Brass, Bless Me, Father.

I'm sure that there'll be a lot of disagreement with some of those titles.

Point?

Nul point.

They're all very *ITV* though aren't they? The old stuff listed never had the same polish as the equivalent BBC fare. And the newer stuff there is conspicuous by being at least 10 years old if not older.

Jeeves & Wooster is different. I *adore* Wodehouse, but after viewing the box set I have to say it too goes downhill after series 2. And some of that is Stephen Fry mugging - Jeeves would never mug or smarm. It's tantamount to treason to say this but Mr Fry really lets it down.

Oh and Hale and Pace??? :O

You could say the same thing about life.

There's decent stuff on ITV if you look for it, the superb Dexter being a case in point.

And, at the moment, Harry Hill, Moving Wallpaper, Law and Order:UK, the Bill...
Alright, it's not a comprehensive or long list, but a longer list than bloody Channel 4 have at the moment!

And then on ITV2, Entourage and The Office USA (when they can be arsed to show it).

Perhaps, perhaps. They've certainly had problems over the past decade - but there's Al Murray's Happy Hour recently on ITV1, and on ITV2 there's been Keith Lemon's Very Brilliant World Tour, Celebrity Juice, No Heroics, etc. Perhaps none are mindblowingly amazing, but they're all 'pretty good' at worst.

For Aaron, this is a surprisingly valid point. Plus, we're not paying for ITV (only indirectly) so why bother getting worked up.

I'll always love them for Cracker.
They don't ever need to do anything else to impress me. :)
