Obama's promise to engage in "smarter diplomacy" has been a dismal failure so far. Over the course of the last week the administration bungled Brown's reception (the official excuse was that Obama was tired), Hillary Clinton bungled a presentation to the Russians and bungled the names of several diplomats and an administration official was quoted was saying, "There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment."
And then there was the huge slap in the face delivered by Russia over Iran's nuclear weapons program and the missile defense shield in eastern Europe. The U.S. looked weak, the Russians looked strong and several staunch American allies in eastern Europe were left high and dry.
Not so smart at all. Hopefully the president and his men will step up their game quickly before they start causing real damage.

What I was wondering is if the Brits are Up In Arms.
Obama could spit gold nuggets and many americans would find fault in it.
Actually not having a bunch of posh stuff for Brown made me like him more.

Likewise, he could turn gold to spit and many non-Americans would still sing his praises. The cult of personality is eroding and that is a good thing.

If only that were true, Big Brother is still here but he's learned from his mistakes and he watches less overtly these days, which is IMO more dangerous.
I hate few things and of those none, if any, are humans. But I do hate blind and unquestioning faith in people and dogma and institutions (political / religious / scientific); things that will always end in disappointment. I hate Cult of Personality. I hate that tendency within me to comply with it despite my acute awareness of it.

We'll never shake it completely, it's too useful of a tool for those in power. But I'm just relieved to see news agencies starting to suggest that the emperor may not be stark naked, but perhaps he's a little underdressed. I worked at a newspaper for years and I was getting nervous about the blatant Obama worship. Hopefully he'll get it together and earn his praise - I'd like to see him be a successful president.
